HOLLAND - The Calvin baseball team picked up two much-needed victories at Hope Thursday afternoon, defeating the Flying Dutchmen 12-6 and 2-1. Playing their fifth and sixth games in three days, the Knights dipped deep into their pitching rotation and received superb efforts in gaining the pair of wins.
In the opener, sophomore Drew Vos gave Calvin 3.1 innings of work with senior Derick Vargas and freshman Cory Laster coming on in relief with Laster getting the pitching victory to run his season record to 2-0 on the year.
Calvin (6-9 overall, 2-4 MIAA) trailed 3-0 and later 6-3 but scored two runs in the fifth to close to within 6-5 and then broke loose for five runs in the sixth to take a 10-6 lead. Sophomores Tyler Tos and Ben Cok had RBI singles in the sixth while junior Scott Tipton had a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, senior Andrew Bosma collected a run-scoring single as the Knights tacked on two insurance runs. Cok and Tos collected three hits apiece while freshman David Noorman had a pair of hits.
In game two, freshman lefthander Grant VanderWall pitched a complete-game victory, striking out three and walking two while allowing only four hits. Bosma belted a two-run RBI double in the third to account for the all the run support VanderWall would need.
The victories snapped a five-game Calvin losing skid and boosted the Knights to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. Calvin will host Hope in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
