Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Bulldogs of Adrian
College Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Fieldhouse, falling by scores of 6-2 and
9-1. The Knights are now 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.
Adrian, the two-time defending MIAA champions got out to an early lead in game
one. Lead-off hitter Cody Meyer got things going with a lead-off double.
Senior Jack Cappelletty then brought Meyer home from third base with a
sacrifice fly.
Calvin responded in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Peter Steiner,
Calvin’s starting pitcher for the outing, doubled to left center field.
Sophomore Ben Cok then hit a two-run homer to left field, scoring two runs and
Calvin a brief lead.
The lead was short-lived, however. In the top of the third, Adrian’s Brian
Bilius tied it up with a single, scoring Andrew DeLuca.
The game turned into a defensive struggle from that point on. In the top of
the seventh inning, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs, all of them
unearned to Steiner. A string of RBI singles scored a few runners who reached
on errors, giving Adrian a 6-2 lead.
Calvin was unable to bounce back in the bottom of the inning. Steiner, Jack
Jorgenson and Cok went down in consecutive at bats, finishing the game at 6-2.
Steiner pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs. Cok batted in the
Knights only two runs.

Similar to the first game, Calvin gave up runs in the top half of the first
inning in game two. Senior Jeff Groenewald surrendered three runs in the
first. A Joe Dubina single scored Adam DeLuca and and a Jason Greer single
brought in two more runs.
Calvin was held scoreless until the bottom of the third when Dan Happ hit an
RBI single. But Happ was then caught stealing after Andrew Bosma struck out,
ending the inning. Adrian rattled off six runs in the next three innings to
take a commanding 9-1 lead.
From there, Calvin was able to put runners on base, but failed to bring them
home. The Knights recorded at least two singles in the fourth and fifth
innings, but didn’t take any runs away from it. Jake Van Alten went 2-3,
leading the Knights at the plate and Ben Cok tallied Calvin’s lone RBI.
Calvin will travel to Hope on Thursday for a conference doubleheader slated to
start at 2 p.m.
