Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams emerged victorious in their
third meet of the young season. Their victories came at their own Calvin
Invitational.
The meet, which consisted of local rivals Hope, Alma, and Aquinas, was held in
the Huizenga Track and Tennis Center on the Sturrus Track. It marked the first
time Calvin has hosted an indoor event and the first time since 2006 that
Calvin has hosted any sort of track and field meet.
The men prevailed with a score of 183. Hope followed with 143 points and
Aquinas and Alma rounded out the meet with scores of 114 and 82.5,
respectively.
Sophomore Aaron Meckes finished first in the shot-put with a throw of 46-10
1/4. Sophomore Russell Kamps took the crown in triple jump with a
hop-skip-and-jump of 40-5. Calvin swept the first six spots of the 5,000 meter
run with junior Rhett Morici finishing first with a time of 15:17. Calvin’s
relay squad of sophomore Greg Whittle, senior Ben Dykema, sophomore Daniel Mc
Elheny, and junior Nick Kramer also took first with a time of 10:51. In the 4
by 400 relay, the Calvin team of freshman Ryan Huffman, junior Kyle Ramthun,
freshman Josh Stuive, and freshman Calvin Kuyers took first, finishing in 3:31.
Seniors Ben Van Wyk and Jake Baker also took the top two spots in the
steeplechase for the Knights.
A big highlight for the men came from freshman Matt Christians who took third
in the high jump with a career-best jump of 6-6 ¾.
For the women, senior Rachel Boerner and freshman Olivia Butler finished first
and second in the 400 meter dash, Boerner with a time of 58.26 seconds and
Butler with a time of 1:02.77.
Freshman Alyssa Oram and junior Sarah Fennema were the sole steeplechase
participants, Oram placing first at 11:38 and Fennema second at 12:31.18.
Freshman Hilary Banning and sophomore Laura Sybesma took first and second for
the Knights in the triple jump. Senior Rebekah Van Dyk jumped 5-3 3/4, taking
first in the high jump. Senior Sarah Reasoner and sophomore Jentien Silvestro
went first and second in shot put, Reasoner with a toss of 44-6 1/4. Senior
Leigha Oberle also had a strong throw of 42-4 ¾ in the weight throw.
As a team, the Calvin women squeaked out a victory with 155 points, a
half-point ahead of Hope which garnered 154.5 points. Aquinas scored 126.5 and
Alma scored 87 points. Calvin’s 4x400 relay team propelled the Knights to
their late lead with a first place finish of 4:07. The relay consisted of
freshman Julie Busscher, Olivia Butler, junior Jordan Gabrielse, and Rachel
Boerner.
Coach Bret Otte was pleased with his teams at the unprecedented event, and
likes to use the meet as a benchmark.
“It was fun to see our rivals. This meet points out where we’re strong and
things we need to work on,” he commented.
Both teams will now break for two weeks and will return to action on February
11 and 12 at the Grand Valley State Big Meet in Allendale.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The 178th edition of the Calvin-Hope men’s basketball rivalry will take place
Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Hope leads the
all-time series 90-87 but Calvin took round one earlier this month, defeating
the Flying Dutchmen 95-81 at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse on January 5. Hope leads
the MIAA standings however at 6-1 in league play while Calvin is a game back at
5-2.
Hope has won its last six games while Calvin brings a three-game win streak
into the Saturday showdown.
In addition, Calvin head coach Kevin Vande Streek and Hope head coach Matt
Neil will be participating in the NABC’s Suits and Sneakers Weekend. Both
coaches will be wearing sneakers with their suits this weekend to demonstrate
support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less
cancer and more birthdays.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin at Albion men’s and women’s swim meet competition scheduled for
Saturday afternoon has been postponed. The competition is postponed because of
illness on the Albion campus that has forced postponement of all weekend
athletics competition at the school. A makeup date for the Calvin/Albion dual
meet has not yet been announced.
