Men's/Women's Basketball Teams Pick Up Conference Victories Over Albion
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 62, Albion 36
ALBION - The Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 16-3 overall and to
10-0 in the MIAA with a 62-36 victory at Albion Wednesday evening.
Calvin trailed 15-10 midway through the first half but ripped off 13
unanswered points to build a 23-15 lead and never looked back.Calvin led 28-17
at halftime and continued to keep the pressure on the second half, limiting the
host Britons to just 19 second half points while the Knights scored 34 points
over the final 20 minutes.
“I thought our defense over the final 30 minutes was phenomenal tonight,” said
Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross. “Albion is a really good team that
pushed us to the final seconds at our place in December so we knew we would
need a defensive effort like that to win. I thought we also had some strong
post play both offensively and defensively and our guards came up with some key
plays. It was a good win for our team.”
Calvin was led in scoring by sophomores Kelsy Irwin and Ally Wolffis with 12
points apiece with Irwin going 4-for-4 from three-point range. As a team,
Calvin was 9-of-19 from beyond the three-point arc for a 47.4 percent
three-point clip. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik also had 10 points, six boards and
three blocked shots while sophomore Julia Hilbrands chipped in with eight
points and five rebounds off the bench for the Knights.
Junior Courtney Kurncz also had a solid game for Calvin with seven rebounds
and three assists while sophomore point guard Logan Marsh tossed in a pair of
triples for six points.
Albion (8-10 overall, 6-3 MIAA) was led in scoring by Patty Rewa with eight
points. The Britons shot 30.4 percent overall with Calvin holding a 37-33
rebounding edge.

Midway through the conference season, the Knights came up with a huge 81-50
victory over the Britons of Albion. At the midpoint of the MIAA schedule, the
Knights are tied for second place in the league standings with Adrian at 5-2,
one game behind league-leading Hope (6-1).
Calvin maintained the lead throughout the game and limited the Britons to
30.2% shooting.
The Knights opened the game on a 12-2 run, forcing a timeout from Albion Coach
Jody May. Calvin continued to dominate every facet of the game, and concluded
the first half on top 42-17. Led by senior Brent Schuster’s 3-4 mark, the
Knights shot 7-12 from beyond the arc in the first half.
Calvin continued to roll in the opening stages of the second half, which has
plagued the Knights on more than a few occasions this year. Schuster threw
down a two-handed dunk from the baseline and senior Danny Rodts knocked down a
deep three to start the half.
Calvin stayed hot from the field throughout the game, shooting 56.5% overall
and 12-21 from the perimeter.
Coach Kevin Vande Streek noted the Knights’ strong defensive performance,
singling out Rodts’ efforts in holding J.C. Cruse, Albion’s leading scorer,
without a point.
“That was a great win. We started really well and maintained our defensive
focus,” said Vande Streek.
Calvin was led in scoring by Schuster and sophomore Tom Snikkers, who each had
15 points. Rodts scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Eight players
scored five points or more for the Knights.
Calvin hosts its conference leading rival, Hope, on Saturday.
