Women's Basketball Team Picks Up Win at Alma - Sets Up Showdown for First
Place With Hope; Men's Basketball Team Falls at Adrian and Falls Out of First
Place in MIAA Standings;
Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams Wrap Up Competition at U. of Chicago

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 65, Alma 50
 
ALMA, MI - The Calvin women’s basketball team remained unbeaten in league play
with a 65-50 win at Alma College Saturday afternoon. The victory sets up a
showdown for first place in the MIAA standings next Tuesday night between
Calvin and Hope at Van Noord Arena as both teams will head into the contest
with 6-0 league records.
 
Calvin (12-3 overall) dominated play in the first half against the Scots (1-14
overall, 0-6 MIAA) as the Knights build a 43-13 halftime lead.
 
Calvin substituted liberally throughout the second half as Alma got no closer
than 14 points the rest of the way.
 
Sophomore center Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led the
Knights with 25 points and 11 rebounds along with four blocked shots and three
steals in just 20 minutes of action to notch her 19th collegiate double-double
including her eighth double-double of the season. Sophomore Julia Hilbrands
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added eight points and five rebounds
off the bench while Logan Marsh (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) had seven points
and rebounds. Junior Heather DeKleine (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also
chipped in with six points and six rebounds off the bench.
 
Alma was led in scoring by Sydney Beckwith with 18 points and 11 rebounds
while Danielle Hicks had 10 points.
 
Calvin held a 45-36 rebounding advantage and shot 40 percent from the floor.
The Knights were also 16 of 17 at the free throw line for a 93.3 percent clip.
 
Tuesday’s game against Hope is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
The game will be the first of two regular season meetings between the two
rivals with Calvin slated to travel to Hope on February 5 for the return
meeting.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

ADRIAN - Calvin was unable to make a double-digit second half lead hold up as
the Knights suffered a 69-59 defeat at Adrian Saturday night. The loss drops
Calvin out of a tie for first place in the MIAA standings as the Knights (7-8
overall) are now 2-2 in league play, one game behind 3-1 Adrian, Albion, Hope
and Kalamazoo.
 
Calvin led 29-22 at halftime and 36-26 five minutes into the second half but
Adrian (8-6 overall) went on a 25-4 run over the next eight minutes to take a
51-40 lead. Calvin came back to narrow the margin down to five points at 55-50
with 3:03 left the Bulldogs responded with a three-point shot on the subsequent
possession and then proceeded to connect on 11 free throws in the final 2:03 of
play to seal the win.
 
Calvin struggled with its field goal shooting throughout the game, connecting
on just 34.1 percent of its attempts. Of Calvin's 14 field goals, nine were
from three-point range as the Knights were 9 of 23 (.391) from downtown. Calvin
did shoot 23 of 23 (.957) at the free throw line but Adrian shot 48.4 percent
from the field in the second half including 50 percent (7 of 14) from
three-point range over the final 20 minutes of play. The Bulldogs also
outrebounded Calvin 32-31, marking just the third time that Calvin has been
outrebounded in a game this year.
 
Calvin was led in defeat by senior Brent Schuster (Denver, CO/Denver Christian
HS) who tallied 12 points while sophomore Tom Snikkers (Jenison/Unity Christian
HS) and senior Brad Schynders (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had 10 points
apiece.
 
Adrian was led in the win by Wesley Reed with 16 points.
 
Calvin will now prepare for a road game at Alma next Wednesday in a game
scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped
up competition at the University of Chicago Invitational late Saturday night.
The Calvin women finished the two-day meet in second place with 942 points
while the Calvin men took third with 624.5 points. Host Chicago won the women's
meet with 1,251 points and the men's meet with 1,036.5 points.
 
Highlighting the evening for the Calvin men on Saturday was freshman Andrew
Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) who won the three-meter diving
competition with an NCAA III qualifying score of 497.10. Sophomore Mark Rushlow
(Goshen, IN/Northridge HS) captured the 100 butterfly (54.16) while also
placing 10th in the 100 freestyle (49.90). Junior Ross Battoclette
(Cincinnatti, OH/Clark Montessori HS) had another big day, placing second in
the 200 freestyle (1:45.83) while also placing fourth in the 100 freestyle
(48.33).
 
Other top performances for the Calvin men included freshman Andrew Mitchell
(Iron Mountain, MI/Iron Mountain HS) taking third in the 100 butterfly (55.69),
sophomore Mathias Bares (Holland/West Ottawa HS) taking second in the 1650
freestyle (17:08.65) and sophomore Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, IN/Home Schooled)
taking second in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.58).
 
In the women's meet, Calvin received victories from sophomore Stephanie Fox
(Kentwood/Home Schooled) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.17), sophomore Elizabeth
Counsel (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) in the 100 breaststroke
(1:08.08) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.94) and senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky,
OH/Perkins HS) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.25) with Bressler also taking third
in the 100 freestyle (55.79).
 
Other top three individual finishes included a third place finish by senior
Caitlin Alexander (Holland/Holland Christian HS) in the 100 butterfly
(1:01.76), a second place finish by junior Briana Seaks (East Lansing/Okemos)
in the 100 butterfly (1:04.06) and a third place finish in the 200 backstroke
(2:1825) and a second place finish by sophomore Sam Klaasen (Holland/Holland
Christian HS) on the one-meter diving board (394.35).
 
Both Calvin teams will return to action next weekend with the women traveling
to Saint Mary's on Friday and both the men's and women's teams hosting
Kalamazoo on Saturday.
