MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE - The Calvin men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened their seasons on Friday night at the Bob Eubanks Open hosted by Grand Valley State University.
Both teams turned in a number of noteworthy performances. On the women's side, senior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN/Cambridge-Isanti HS) took fifth in the shot put with a strong NCAA III indoor provisional qualifying throw of 45-2 1/4. The throw is just nine inches shy of an NCAA III (indoor) automatic qualifying mark.
Senior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) also got off to a quick start, placing fourth in the 400 meter dash with an NCAA III indoor provisional qualifying time of 57.82. Because the competition was held on an oversized 300 meter indoor track, Boerner's converted time is 58.32.
Other notables for the Calvin women included senior Gretchen Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) placing ninth in the 3,000 meters (10:33.46), freshman Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) taking sixth (19:19.05) and senior Anna VanWyk (Dorr/South Christian HS) placing seventh (19:30.33) while freshman Devin VanDoornik (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS) was ninth (19:55.58).
On the men's side, Calvin's distance and middle-distance crew had a standout evening. In the mile run, senior Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) just missed an NCAA III provisional qualifying time, placing second in 4:17.80 while sophomore teammate Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) was fourth (4:18.76).
In the 5,000 meters, Calvin took the top five spots led by junior Rhett Morici (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North HS) who was first in 15:22.39 followed by junior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) in second (15:26.44), senior Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) in third (15:28.40), sophomore Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) in fourth (15:30.74) and senior Ben VanWyk (Sussex, NJ/High Point HS) in fifth (15:33.26).
In the 800 meters, senior Ben Dykema (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS) was sixth (1:58.57) and junior Carson Sterchi (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake Central) seventh (1:58.59).
