By Sports Information Student Assistant Andrew Knot
After a tight first half, the Knights rolled to a 71-49 victory against
Rochester College on Tuesday night.
Calvin led 28-25 at half-time and trailed for significant portions of the
first half, at one point trailing by eight. The Knights shot a mere 30% in the
first half, and struggled to make good on some open looks in the post. Calvin
connected on only 11 field goals in the half.
But Calvin stormed out of half-time, going on a 15-1 run in the first eight
minutes. The Knights established the post well, with sophomores Ally Wolffis
and Carissa Verkaik scoring Calvin’s first eight points of the half.
The Knights cruised from there. They shot the ball a much improved 50% in the
second half and totaled 38 points in the paint. Everyone on the roster saw at
least six minutes and eleven players contributed at least three points.
Verkaik led all scorers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Ally Wolffis also
poured in eight points and grabbed three boards while sophomore Julia Hilbrands
had eight points and six boards off the bench. Calvin enjoyed a 45-36
rebounding advantage in the contest.
“Our defensive intensity made all the difference [in the second half],” said
Coach John Ross.
That defense forced 21 Rochester turnovers, which led to 17 points for the
Knights.
Calvin resumes MIAA competition on Saturday with a trip to Alma.
