WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 66, Calvin 61
THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s basketball team saw
its six-game winning streak come to an end as the Knights were defeated by a
determined Cal Lutheran squad 66-61 at the Posada Royale Holiday Classic Friday
night. The host Regals (6-5) stretched their winning streak to five games in
the process. Cal Lutheran used swarming defensive attack and an aggressive
charge on the boards to keep Calvin (9-3) off-balance. The Regals outrebounded
Calvin 46-37 and limited Calvin to just 21.4 percent field goal shooting in the
first half as Cal Lutheran led 31-24 at the break.
Ranked 24th by d3hoops.com, Calvin ripped off a 13-2 run to open the second
half to take a 37-33 lead but Cal Lutheran responded with nine answered points
to build a 42-37 advantage and never trailed again. After falling behind by
six, Calvin made a late run, tying the contest 61-61 on a three-pointer by
sophomore Kelsey Irwin. Erica Whitely of Cal Lutheran came right back with a
clutch triple that put the Regals up 61-58 with just over three minutes left to
play.
Calvin later drew to within two at 63-61 on another triple by Irwin with 1:53
to go. Calvin then had a chance to tie or take the lead on two occasions but
misfired on a three-pointer with 1:03 remaining and then turned the ball over
with 24 seconds left that led to a fast-break layup and foul.
Calvin shot just 45.7 percent in the second half but just 35.4 percent
overall. The Knights also connected on just 3 of 26 from three-point range for
a frigid 11.5 percent clip. Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore Carissa
Verkaik who notched her 17th collegiate double-double with 18 points and 11
rebounds. Sophomore Ally Wolffis also had 17 points despite playing only 17
minutes because of foul trouble. Irwin also had nine points - all on
three-point shots - while junior Courtney Kurncz had eight points and six
boards.
Cal Lutheran was led by Starla Wright with 14 points while Whitely had 13.
Verkaik and Wolffis were both named to the all-tournament team while Whitely
and Wright were Co-MVP’s of the tournament.
