Women's Basketball Defeats Kalamazoo on the Road;
Men's Basketball Defeats Trolls With Late Three-Point Surge
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 76, Kalamazoo 35
 
KALAMAZOO - The Calvin women’s basketball team improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0
in MIAA play with a 76-35 win at Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon.
 
Calvin led 38-12 at halftime and never looked back. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik
(Holland Christian HS) had 22 points and five rebounds while junior Courtney
Kurncz (St. Johns HS) and sophomore Ally Wolffis (Muskegon-Mona Shores HS) had
eight points apiece. Sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) also came off the bench to provide six points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore Logan Marsh (Byron Center HS) also provided a game-high five assists.
Calvin played 13 players on Saturday and 11 individuals reaching the scoring
column.
 
"I thought we had a good performance, particularly coming off an emotional win
over Carthage Wednesday night," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross.
"We are playing with some confidence right now which is important because we
have some challenging games ahead of us on the schedule. Any time you can get a
conference win, it's a good win so we feel good about we we accomplished this
afternoon."
 
Calvin shot 49.2 percent overall in the win over the Hornets and held a 51-25
rebounding advantage.
 
Calvin returns to action on December 18 when it hosts Albion at 1 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 90, Trinity Christian 79
 
PALOS HEIGHTS, IL - The Calvin men’s basketball team picked up a 90-79 victory
at Trinity Christian College Saturday night. Calvin (4-4) led by 12 points in
the first half but Trinity Christian (7-7) rallied to tie the game 35-35 at
halftime. In the second half, Calvin used a 9-0 run inside the final three
minutes to pull away for the win.
 
Senior Danny Rodts (Niles HS) cashed in on two three-point shots in the late
surge while junior Brian Haverdink (Holland Christian HS) also connected on a
triple in the run. Rodts finished the game with 20 points on the strength of
five three-point field goals.
 
Six Calvin players notched double digits in scoring as Bryan Powell (Wyoming
Park HS) had 13, Tom Snikkers (Unity Christian HS) 12, Matt DeBoer (Covenant
Christian HS) 11 and Brent Schuster (Denver, CO) and Brad Schyder (Unity
Christian HS) 10 points apiece. Calvin was 11 of 24 from three-point range and
shot 50.8 percent overall.
 
"I expected a very hard-fought game and that's exactly what we got tonight,"
said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek after the game. "Trinity
was coming off of two wins and I know they were really looking forward to this
game. They beat us here two years ago and I knew this would be a dog-fight. I'm
proud of our guys for the way they competed tonight. Trinity is a very good
team and to get a win against a good team on the road is always big."
 
Calvin held a 40-30 rebounding advantage with Rodts ripping down nine rebounds
and Snikkers collecting eight caroms. Freshman Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illliana
Christian HS) also had a solid game near his hometown as he scored nine points
and dished out a team-high five assists. As a team, Calvin collected 17
assists. The Knights were also 13 of 17 (.765) from the free throw line.
 
Trinity Christian was led in scoring by Jamie King who poured in 35 points
while Michael Taylor had 14.
 
Calvin will now prepare to host the Saints of Aquinas on December 18 at 3 p.m.
at Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
