Calvin Second in Learfield Director's Cup Standings;
Carly Prins - Francesca Smith Receive All-Central Region Soccer Honors;
Men's and Women's Soccer Teams Earn Spots in Final National Polls
LEARFIELD DIRECTOR'S CUP STANDINGS
The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors' Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in second place, just 19 points behind first place Washington University of St. Louis.
Calvin has a second place total of 327 points, holding a two-point lead over third place Middlebury (VT). Washington University (MO) leads the list with 336 points.
Calvin picked up 100 points from its women's volleyball team which captured the national championship this fall. The Calvin men's soccer team reached the national quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament this fall which was worth 83 points in the Director's Cup standings. Calvin also received 66 points from its men's cross country team that placed eighth, 63 points from its women's cross country that placed ninth and 25 points from its women's soccer team that also reached the NCAA III Tournament before bowing out in the first round.
The most recent set of fall sports standings includes the sports of men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, women's volleyball and women's field hockey.It does not include football which will conclude in two weeks. The final fall sports standings are slated to be released on December 23.
The Learfield Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director's Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90 points. Third place is worth 85 points and fourth place finishes count for 80 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
Competition will continue with the winter sports season and finish with the conclusion of the spring sports season in May.
A year ago, Calvin finished 14th in the final Division III standings with a total of 634.0 points. Calvin is one of only seven schools to finish in the top-25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Two members of the Calvin women's soccer team have received Division III All-Central Region honors as named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and sponsored by Performance Subaru.
Calvin senior forward Carly Prins has been named to the All-Central Region first team while sophomore midfielder Francesca Smith has been named to the All-Central Region third team.
As a first team selection, Prins is now eligible for All-America consideration. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Prins is receiving All-Central Region first team honors for the second consecutive year.
This past fall, Prins led Calvin in scoring with 12 goals, two assists and 26 points. She finished her career with 39 goals, 18 assists and 96 points, ranking 10th on the Calvin career list for goals, 12th on the Calvin career list in points and 14th on the Calvin career list in assists. Of her 39 career goals, 12 were game-winners.
Earlier this fall, she was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the fourth straight year. She is one of 12 individual in MIAA women's soccer history to receive All-MIAA first team honors four consecutive years.
Smith is from Bloomington, Indiana. She is a graduate of Bloomington South High School. A strong two-way player, Smith collected four goals, three assists and 11 points this fall with two of her goals proving to be game-winners. One of her game-winning goals came in a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL), giving Calvin its first victory over the Thunder since 1998. She also scored a game-winning goal in an early-season 1-0 victory over regionally-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Smith was also named to the All-MIAA first team this fall.
Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, the Calvin women's soccer team finished 15-3-2 overall this year, reaching the NCAA III Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The Knights earned another trip to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament title, defeating Alma 3-1 in the tournament final.

The Calvin men's and women's soccer teams have both finished in the top 25 in final season national polls. The Calvin women's team has been ranked 20th in the final d3soccer.com Top 25 poll. The Calvin men's soccer team has been ranked seventh in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and sixth in the final d3soccer.com Top 25 poll. The Calvin men's soccer team finished the year with a final record of 16-3-5 while the Calvin women's soccer team finished with a final record of 15-3-2.
