Volleyball Defeats Alma in MIAA Tournament Semifinals - To Face Hope in
Finals

Calvin 3, Alma 1 (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19)

HOLLAND - On Friday night, Calvin ousted Alma in the semi-final match of the
MIAA tournament.
The Knights won in four sets, 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, and 25-19. In the first
set, the Scots battled Calvin to tie the set at 23, but sophomore Jen Pluymert
served out the game, with a Rebecca Kamp kill finishing the set for the
Knights.
Calvin opened the second set on a roll. The Knights’ block came out with a
vengeance, dominating the Scots in the front row. Calvin pulled to a 9-5 lead
before Alma coach Cheyenne Luzynski called a timeout. Calvin came out of the
timeout strong, with junior Erin VanderPlas contributing an overpowering block.
 Calvin didn’t look back from there, going up 18-9 and closing out the second
set 25-16.
Alma showed some fire in the third set, taking an 18-13 lead in the
intermediate stages of the set. Calvin cut the lead to 18-16, but the Scots
pulled away to a 25-20 victory.
Calvin responded in the fourth set, but not after trailing 6-1 to open the
set. Coach Amber Warners called a timeout, gathered her team, and Calvin
bounced back to take a 9-8 lead off a Lizzie Kamp attack down the line. Calvin
then took a 19-13 lead through scrappy defense. The Knights pulled ahead to a
25-19 victory, taking the match in four sets.
“I thought we showed a lot of fight tonight. I’m happy we responded after
dropping the third set,” said Coach Amber Warners. “We held our own at the net
tonight.”
Calvin was led at the net by VanderPlas and Rebecca Kamp at the net, each with
16 kills. DeHaan assisted on 7 blocks. Freshman Megan Rietema led the Knights
with 48 assists and Kelly Peterson contributed 18 digs.
The game took place at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin will square off
against Hope tomorrow in the MIAA championship at 4 p.m. Hope defeated
Kalamazoo in three sets in Friday's second semifinal match.

Calvin junior middle-blocker Rebecca Kamp returned to the Calvin lineup last
month after missing nearly three weeks of time with an illness.
