CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 13, 2010
Comeback Effort Leads Women's Soccer Team To Win Over Trine;
Volleyball Falls at Hope In Three Sets
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Trine 1
By Sports Information Student Assistant Derek Neice
After winning big this past weekend by a score of 6-0, Calvin struggled early
but held on for a victory Wednesday afternoon as the Knights were able to
defeat Trine 3-1. After a scoreless first half the Thunder jumped on top with
a goal, but Calvin managed to retaliate with three of its own to claim the
win.
Goals for Calvin came from sophomore Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN),
freshman Paige Rindells (Bloomington, MN), and sophomore Jillian Honderd
(Hudsonville, MI).
“I thought for most of the first half and the beginning of the second half we
were a little too methodical with not a lot of urgency,” said Coach Recker
afterward. “After giving up the goal we found that urgency and even some
efficiency with some things we talked about at the half.”
Calvin led the shot total by a wide margin of 14-0 at the break, but in the
50th minute Trine opened the floodgates as a result of a number of failed
clearances off the back line for Calvin. Freshman Kristin Elliot (Wooster, OH)
launched a shot from 20 yards out that bounced in for a Thunder goal. That
goal was Trine’s first shot attempt of the game.
Not too long after, though, the Knights leveled things out when in the 65th
minute junior Carly Prins (Hudsonville, MI) played a great curling ball into
the path of Smith, who took a few controlling touches and then lofted the ball
over the keeper’s head from 25 yards out to equalize, her third goal of the
year.
Just a few minutes after that the Knights gained the lead when freshman back
Liz Drennan (St. Charles, IL) completed a great run with the ball into the
Thunder half and finding Rindells, who took a nice side-step around the keeper
and a defender and played the ball into an open net from about 15 yards, her
third goal of the season. At 2-1, Calvin then was in control as things wound
down.
For some extra insurance, a third goal occurred in the 82nd minute for Calvin
after a ball was cleared back to sophomore Sarah Bowden (Uxbridge, MA), who
immediately fired it back into the box, finding Honderd. Honderd turned
quickly and looped a nice shot into the netting, her fourth goal of the year
and the third of the game for the Knights.
“Our program really is dependent on every new class being able to come in and
contribute,” said Recker about the variety of contributions he gets from a
number of players. “I think our program emphasizes how important the flow of
play up to the goal is, because everything before that has extreme value.”
Calvin would finish ahead 26-2 on shots for the game, with Hearn making a save
on the other Thunder attempt. The win improves the Knights’ record to 10-2-2
for the season, and 3-1-1 in the conference.
The next action for Calvin will come on October 19th when the Knights travel
to Holland to take on the Flying Dutch of Hope.

VOLLEYBALL
Hope 3, Calvin 0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-10)
HOLLAND – Calvin’s seven-match win streak came to an end as did its sole
possession of first place in the MIAA standings as the Knights were defeated at
rival Hope Wednesday night 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.
Using the momentum of playing in front of more than 2,000 fans, Hope grabbed a
quick 6-1 lead in set one and used an 8-3 run midway through the set to grab an
early one-set lead.
In set two, Calvin (15-3 overall, 10-1 MIAA) grabbed an 11-8 lead but Hope
(14-4 overall, 10-1 MIAA) went on a 6-2 run to regain the momentum and move on
to the set two win.
In set three, Calvin held an 11-5 advantage but could not withstand Hope’s
comeback effort as the Flying Dutch went on a 13-6 run to take an 18-17 lead
and never trailed again.
Playing in her first match in nearly three weeks after missing substantial
time because of illness, Calvin junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago
Christian HS) had a huge performance in defeat, amassing 18 kills and a .417
attack percentage. Younger sister Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago
Christian HS) had 11 kills while freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 35 assists. Junior Kelly Peterson
(Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) had 12 digs while Rietema added 11 digs.
Normally a force up front, Calvin’s blocking attack came up with just seven
total blocks in the three-set loss as Hope hit .250 as a team led by Jacie
Fiedler’s 17 kills.
Calvin will now prepare for a weekend tournament at North Central College
which will also include teams from Wheaton (IL), St. Mary’s (MN) and St.
Norbert (WI).
