VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-16)
(written by Derek Neice)
Calvin remained perfect in conference play, defeating Albion College in three
sets (25-6, 25-13, 25-16) Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena. Junior Rebecca
Kamp (Orland Park, IL) led the Knights at the net with 13 kills in 20 attempts,
and adding 6 block assists. With the win, the Knights improved their record to
5-0 in the MIAA standings and 10-2 overall.
I thought we came out like we were going to be playing a really even match,”
said coach Amber Warners after the match. “And they stayed that way the whole
game through all three sets, it was really nice to see.”
Calvin set the tone early in the first set, as the Maroon and Gold came out
with intensity and scored fourteen straight points to open the set. Albion was
able to split the next ten points at five apiece, but Calvin then finished the
set on a 6-1 run to take it 25-6.
The Knights retained much of that same intensity in the second set as they
quickly climbed on top again, opening up the set with a 5-2 lead and then
finishing the set on a 20-11 run to win 25-13.
In the final set, the Britons definitely looked stronger and hung around in
the opening part of the set as Calvin only led 14-10 midway through. But the
Knights maintained control of the game as they took the set 25-16, sweeping the
match and adding another win to their MIAA resume for the 2010 season.
The Knights were strong on the nets all day, tallying 38 kills and 30 blocks
as a team. Becca Kamp’s 13 kills were complemented by her younger sister as
sophomore Lizzie Kamp added 7 kills, as well as juniors Erin Vander Plas
(Cadillac, MI) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids, MI) who both finished with 5.
On the back line, Lizzie Kamp also added 13 digs with junior libero Kelly
Peterson (Ramsey, MN) tallying 10 of her own, and freshman setter Megan Rietema
(Grand Rapids, MI) totaled 21 assists and 5 blocks in two sets of play. Senior
setter Carolyn Nelson (Milan, MI) had 11 assists and a block in the final set.
“The bar was set this past weekend, so we’re looking to improve for when we
play those teams again and we’re not going to settle for anything less than
that,” Warners said. “Our goals right now are to just keep improving and to be
consistent and be more mentally tough.”
Tuesday’s match against Albion featured the first of seven straight matches
the Knights will play against MIAA opponents over the next few weeks. Calvin
is back in action next on Friday, September 24th, as the Knights travel to take
on Olivet at 6:30 p.m.
Calvin is now ranked ninth in the AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll. AVCA Poll:
