WOMEN'S SOCCER

(written by Calvin sports information student assistant Derek Neice)

For the first time since 2006, Calvin emerged victorious Tuesday afternoon
over the University of Chicago, as the Knights outlasted the Maroons 1-0 in a
match that went right down to the final seconds of regulation. Freshman winger
Brittany Hieftje (Holland, MI) scored the lone goal of the match, her third of
the year, in the 30th minute of play. Calvin keeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron,
MI), another freshman, recorded her 6th shutout of the year while also tallying
8 saves against the Maroons.

“This is the first time in my ten seasons here that we’ve gotten back to back
wins against the two quality programs that come out of the Chicago area, that
being Wheaton and the University of Chicago,” Calvin coach Mark Recker said
after the game. “We really are a program that has quite a bit of youth, so the
ultimate question so far has been how to sustain a high level of play.”

For the most part, the University of Chicago controlled a large portion of the
game. The Maroons outshot Calvin 13-11 over the course of the match, and in
the first half Calvin struggled to retain possession. But the Knights
certainly stuck with it, and came through when it counted.

Hieftje’s goal came when freshman forward Paige Rindels (Bloomington, MN)
lofted a ball into the box towards the far post. The ball took a bounce and
Hieftje was the first to make contact as she headed it up and over the Chicago
keeper, another defender, and into the net.

The second half would prove to be a largely contested one, as both teams
battled it out in the middle of the field searching for a seam by which to take
an advantage. Neither team would find that seam as the half would be a
scoreless one, but there seemed to be a few more opportunities on goal for both
sides, with both keepers making key stops.

The Knights looked to have things under control as the game wound down, but
the game ended with a major scare as Chicago won a free kick in the final third
of Calvin’s half in the closing seconds. The shot was deflected but played
back in, and after a few seconds of blocked shots and a headed clearance from
the goal line by freshman Andrea Hulls (Columbus, OH), danger was averted and
the game ended.

“Hieftje has been really disciplined about staying on the outside of the post
and coming off that corner, and every one of her goals is a result of the fact
that she’s hanging out by that far post,” Recker said of the freshman. “I’m
really pleased that structurally she knows where to be, it’s really nice when
you get that kind of freshman contribution.”

“Today Hearn was positionally ready and smart,” Recker said of his keeper.
“She’s been a big part of our defense.”

“I think looking at the beginning of our season with the makeup of our team
and the degree of competition we’ve already faced, six and one is a very
pleasant surprise and we’ll take it,” Recker concluded.

Calvin improves to 6-1 on the season with the win and Chicago drops to 1-2-1.
Last season, the Maroons defeated Calvin by a score o 3-0, and again the
Knights hadn’t beaten Chicago since the 2006 season.

Calvin’s next action will come on September 18th when the Knights travel to
nationally ranked Augustana (IL).

Calvin also moved back into the national rankings in this week's National
