Men's Golf Fifth at First MIAA Jamboree;
Carlia Canto Named MIAA Women's Golfer of the Week
MEN'S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK - Calvin participated in the first MIAA jamboree of the year on Thursday and came away with a fifth place team score of 306 strokes. The jamboree took place at the Bedford Valley Country Club with Olivet serving as host. Olivet used home course advantage to its advantage with a sizzling team score of 289 strokes, finishing six strokes ahead of Trine University and 14 strokes ahead of third place Hope. Adrian was fourth at 305 with Calvin just a stroke behind in fifth.
Calvin's top individual golfer on Thursday was senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 75 that left him tied for 11th place. Senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind with a 76 (tied for 14th) while sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a 77, sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 78 and freshman David Veen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 78. Junior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) also had a round of 78 while competing individually.
Justin Ardelean of Olivet was the tournament medalist with a round of 69. Three other golfers had rounds of 71.
Calvin is back in action on September 15 when it competes at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.

WOMEN'S GOLF
The first-ever MIAA Player of the Week in women's golf has been announced and the first honoree is Calvin College freshman Carlia Canto. Canto is receiving the award for matches and tournaments played through September 6.
The MIAA Player of the Week award in women's golf is making its debut this year.
Canto, a freshman from Marysville (Port Huron Northern HS), set a school record in her first collegiate competition with an 18-hole score of 77, earning medalist honors in a dual match with Aquinas at the Scott Lake Golf Club.
Calvin recently took second at the Hope Invitational with Canto firing a round of 88 despite windy playing conditions at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club. Calvin returns to action on Saturday, competing at an MIAA Tournament hosted by Alma College.
