WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Wisconsin-Eau Claire
ST. LOUIS, MO - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 1-0 victory over
Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon on the campus of Washington University.
After a scoreless first half, Calvin turned the tempo up a notch in the second
half, outshooting the Bluegolds 11-3. Calvin's offensive surge finally paid off
in the 77th minute of play when sophomore Francesa Smith (Bloomington,
IN/Bloomington South HS) received a crafty heel flick pass from senior Elaine
Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) and deposited a shot into a wide-open
net.
Calvin then kept Wisconsin-Eau Claire without a shot over the final 13 minutes
of play to gain the shutout win.
Calvin (2-1-0) held a 13-7 shots at goal advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Ashton
Hearn (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern HS) had three saves for Calvin to
post her second collegiate shutout.
Calvin's defensive backline also came up with a key save in the first half as
a Wisconsin-Eau Claire shot was cleared off the backline. The Bluegolds also
hit the crossbar with a shot in the final two minutes of the first half.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it journeys to Madonna for a
non-conference game in Livonia at 4 p.m.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Goshen 0
(written by sports information student assistant Derek Neice)
In the second game of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament, Calvin knocked off
the Goshen Maple Leafs by a score of 3-0. After defeating the Milwaukee School
of Engineering 1-0 Friday, the Knights added a second shutout on Saturday, with
all three goals coming from three different contributors.
“We’re giving different guys different opportunities on the field, trying guys
in different spots and trying to find the right chemistry and the right offense
and defense,” Calvin coach Chris Hughes said in a postgame interview.
“Yesterday could have been a tale of more goals, and today they took
advantage on that.”
The match started off back and forth in the opening minutes as both teams
looked to figure out their opponent and try and find some sort of weak point to
take advantage of. Calvin soon started to control the game more or less with
better possession, and that led to more chances on goal. The first came in
just the twelfth minute, when senior forward Brad Heethuis (Jenison, MI)
exploded into the box on a perfectly timed run, receiving a through ball from
teammate Scott Hooker (Hudsonville, MI), and slotting it with his left foot
into the side netting just inside the right post.
The goal would prove to be enough for the Knights on this day as the defense
stepped up for the second consecutive day in providing shutouts, but Calvin
would soon add more to the tally, but only after a close call on the defensive
side. Goshen’s Lewis Caskey (Goshen, IN) ran onto a long pass played deep into
the heart of the defense and managed to get a shot on goal, but Calvin keeper
Ryan Bratt (Silver Spring, MD) got a hand on it and deflected it away. Soon
after, Calvin upped their lead.
Sophomore forward Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids, MI) subbed into the game in
the 37th minute, and immediately got into the box and received a long lofted
ball from junior back Lucas Wilgenburg (Visalia, CA), redirecting it with his
head past the keeper and into the net for Calvin’s second goal of the day.
The score would remain a 2-0 Calvin lead going into the half, with Calvin
holding a 7-2 shot advantage over the Maple Leafs, with Bratt getting two saves
on both of the Goshen shots.
In the second half it was more or less an even game as Calvin looked to find
more on goal to increase the lead and Goshen tried to get back into the game.
Both teams would be unable to score throughout more of the half until the 86th
minute when Calvin’s Heethuis took a ball into a triple team in the box,
somehow popping it out to sophomore back Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville, MI) who
sidestepped a defender and then coolly launched it home into the side netting.
The third goal cemented the game for the Knights and the game would end at
that score, with Calvin outscoring its opponents by a total of 4-0 over the two
games these past two days.
“Our boys had a good game and it was a productive weekend,” Hughes said. “As
a coaching staff we figured out several different options and we’ll get some
more of those opportunities next weekend.”
Calvin’s next game features a great matchup of talented schools as the Knights
travel to Illinois to take on Wheaton College.
