Calvin Baseball Players Land All-MIAA Honors;
Men's Basketball Finishes Second in Final NCAA III Attendance Figures
BASEBALL
Three members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors. Junior Keith Spoelstra has been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Andrew Bosma and sophomore Tyler Berger have been named to the All-MIAA second team.
A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. A graduate of Eastern Christian High School, Spoelstra recently completed a sterling junior campaign on the mound that saw him go 6-3 with a 3.54 earned run average. In conference play, Spoelstra was particularly affective, producing a 5-2 record with a league-leading 1.99 earned run average. During the first week of the MIAA season, Spoelstra was named the MIAA's Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game victory over eventual MIAA champion Adrian College.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Bosma is receiving All-MIAA second team accolades for the first time. He has been selected to the All-MIAA second team spot at the utility position. In conference games, Bosma batted .353 this spring with 17 runs batted in. He also scored 20 runs and had an on-base percentage of .392. In overall games, Bosma batted .389 with 33 RBI's, finishing in a tie for sixth place on the Calvin single-season list for runs batted in.
Calvin's starting rightfielder, Berger is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. In conference games this spring, Berger batted .351 with 17 runs scored, 15 runs batted in and four home runs. Berger also committed just one error in 55 chances for a .982 fielding percentage. Over his last eight conference games, Berger batted .481 with seven runs batted in and five runs scored.
Calvin finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 19-20 and a conference mark of 15-13 that was good for a fourth place MIAA finish. Calvin concluded the season with a five-game winning streak and winning seven of its final nine games.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
MEN'S BASKETBALL AGAIN THIRD IN FINAL NCAA III ATTENDANCE STANDINGS
Calvin College is once again among the NCAA III leaders in men's basketball attendance. Calvin finished second in this year's standings with an average of 2,135 fans per game. MIAA rival Hope repeated as the NCAA III attendance champion in men's basketball for the eighth straight year as it averaged 2,836 fans a game during the 2009-2010 season. Hope's attendance crown is its 12th.
Combined, Calvin and Hope have now combined to win the last 12 NCAA III attendance crowns.
Calvin's 2009-2010 average was strengthened by a crowd of 4,468 fans on January 6 against Hope at Van Noord Arena. Overall, Calvin drew 36,298 fans over 17 home dates. Calvin topped 2,000 fans in eight of its 17 home dates.
Calvin and Hope helped the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to top all Division III conferences for the 19th straight year with an average of 1,006 fans a game. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin finished second with an average of 777 fans a game.
Calvin holds the NCAA III single-season record with an average of 4,018 fans established during the 1992-93 season. Calvin also holds the NCAA III single game attendance record with 11,442 fans for its January 29, 1997 game against Hope at the VanAndel Arena. Calvin has captured 13 overall NCAA III attendance crowns including 12 in the last 21 years.
