The Calvin women's tennis team will head to the Windy City to compete in a six-team NCAA III regional hosted by the University of Chicago later this week. Calvin (17-3) will face Baldwin-Wallace (18-7) in a first round NCAA III Tournament match on Thursday in Chicago. The winner of Thursday's first round match will face Washington University of St. Louis (13-5), ranked 21st nationally. Ranked third nationally, Chicago (20-3) will face the winner of a first-round match between Webster (11-4) and Grove City (11-2). The Webster/Grove City match like the Calvin/Baldwin-Wallace match will take place on May 13 with second round play second for May 14 and third round (regional finals) action slated for May 15.
Calvin will be making its first appearance in the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin gained an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament title on May 1, defeating rival Hope 6-3 in the tournament finals. Calvin also captured the MIAA regular season title with an 8-0 conference record.
Baldwin-Wallace advanced in similar fashion, winning the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament title, defeating Otterbein 5-4 in the OAC Tournament final. Baldwin-Wallace also captured the OAC regular season title with a 9-0 conference record.
Baldwin-Wallace is making its third NCAA III Tournament appearance in the last four years. In 2007, the Yellow Jackets met MIAA opponent Albion and defeated the Britons 5-4.
Calvin will be facing an OAC opponent for the first time since the 2007 season when the Knights defeated Otterbein 7-2 in a non-conference regular season match.
Calvin has five players this spring who have hit double-digits in victories in singles play led by No. 1 singles player Melissa Oosterhouse who is 23-1. Calvin used back-to-back pitching gems to move within a game of fourth place in the MIAA standings, sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Alma Monday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin won the opener 2-1 behind a three-hit complete-game pitching performance by junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL/Glenbard South HS). Steiner carried a no-hitter through four innings with the Scots (10-28 overall, 6-20 MIAA) breaking through for their first hit and only run in the fifth inning. Calvin (17-20 overall, 13-13 MIAA) scored a run in the second on an RBI groundout by freshman Drew Vos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and added another in the third on a run-scoring single by junior Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
In the sixth, Steiner stranded an Alma runner at third and then set the side down in order in the seventh to record his fifth victory of the year against three defeats. Steiner struck out seven batters and walked just two in the win. Steiner also helped his own cause at the plate with a pair of hits while Berger had two hits as well.
In game two, freshman Eric Poencet (Grand Rapids/Northview HS) came within three outs of a no-hitter as he entered the seventh without allowing a hit and holding a 5-0 lead. Poencet's no-hit bid was broken up however on a bloop single to left by Joseph Yourchock. Poencet struck out the next batter but the Scots then used two singles, an error and a walk to creep to within 5-2 and also fill the bases. Sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe/Grosse Pointe South HS) then came on in relief and got the Knights out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop-up to shortstop to gain his second save of the season.
Poencet (3-1) was the winner, striking out six and walking two.
Calvin collected eight hits in the win led by Vos and senior Kyle Gurzyski (Ludington/Ludington HS) who collected two hits apiece. Gurzysnki doubled in two runs in the sixth while Vos had an RBI single in the fourth.
Junior Andrew Bosma (Holland/Holland Christian HS) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first, raising his season RBI total to 33. With 33 RBI's, Bosma is now tied for sixth place on the Calvin single-season list.
With the pair of victories, Calvin moved to within a game of fourth place Albion (14-14 MIAA). Calvin will travel to Alma on Tuesday for a season-ending doubleheader at 2 p.m. The Knights can gain a share of fourth place in the final MIAA standings with a win over Alma and can gain sole possession of fourth place with a doubleheader sweep.
