COMSTOCK PARK - The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with non-conference rival Aquinas Tuesday afternoon at Fifth/Third Ballpark and in the process, snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Saints dating back to the 2001 season.
Aquinas captured game one 8-4 but Calvin came back to win game two 10-0 behind a grand slam home run by junior Andrew Bosma (Holland/Holland Christian HS) in the third inning. Bosma drove in eight runs in the doubleheader, raising his season RBI total to 32 and moving him into a tie for seventh place on the Calvin single-season RBI list. Bosma went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader to raise his season batting average to .396. Senior Rob Kool (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance in game two to pick up his second collegiate victory on the mound. Junior Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with three runs batted in, raising his season batting average to .339.
In game one, Calvin (15-20 overall) grabbed a 4-1 lead with a three-run third as as Bosma drove in two with a bases-loaded single. Sophomore Scott Titpon (Stow, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) then drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Aquinas (25-22-2) came back with three runs in the bottom of the third and followed with single runs in the fourth and fifth and two more runs in the sixth. Aquinas collected 10 hits in game one. Sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe/Grosse Pointe South HS) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Junior Derrick Vargas and freshman Chad VanSoelen (Byron Center/South Christian HS) also saw time in relief.
In game two, Calvin broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third. Berger drove in the first run on a sharp single to right that also loaded the bases. Bosma then whacked a line drive over the left field wall for his second home run of the spring and first collegiate grand slam.
Calvin added three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. In the fourth, Bosma was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Tipton followed with a run-scoring single. Senior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL/Glenbrook South HS) then drove in another run with a groundout to second base. In the fifth, Berger ripped a two-run RBI double for his team-leading 16th extra-base hit of the year. Kool meanwhile struck out three batters and allowed only three hits.
Also collecting extra-base hits for Calvin in the game two win were Tipton with a triple and freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a double.
Calvin will close out its season with a four-game series this weekend against Alma. The Knights will travel to Alma on Friday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader and then return home on Saturday to host the Scots for a twinbill slated to start at 1 p.m.
