Cornerstone 5, Calvin 4

Calvin came up just short in a pair of one-run defeats to visiting Cornerstone University Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex as the Knights were defeated 4-3 and 5-4 with the second game lasting eight innings.

In the opener, Cornerstone (9-28) scored a pair of quick runs in the first inning on the strength of three hits. Calvin (9-15) came back with a run in the fourth as junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) reached base on a lead-off double and later scored on an error. The visiting Golden Eagles came back with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to build a 4-1 lead. Calvin then mounted a comeback, scoring a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) and then scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Prins that plated VanRooyen who reached on a two-out double. Senior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) then reached base on a single to left, placing two runners on board . Freshman Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids Christian HS) then belted a sinking line drive to center that was snared on the run by the Cornerstone centerfielder to extinguish the Calvin threat.

Calvin had seven hits in the loss with Prins and VanRooyen collecting two hits apiece. Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss, scattering eight hits over seven innings.

In game two, Calvin committed three costly errors that led to four unearned runs in the first three innings. Like game one, Calvin began to chip away into the Cornerstone lead, scoring two runs in the fourth as Prins singled and DeWeerd doubled. Prins then scored on a run-scoring single by freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS) and DeWeerd was delivered home on a run-scoring single by freshman Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ). In the fifth, VanRooyen scored on a run-scoring single by Johnson.

The Knights then tied it in the bottom of the seventh as VanRooyen reached base on an error and later scored on a single to left by Fri.

With the international run rule in affect in the eighth inning, Cornerstone moved a runner to third on a sacrifice bunt and brought the run home on a subsequent groundout. In the Calvin half of the eighth, the Knights had runners on first and third with no out but had both runners erased moments later on a double steal attempt. Cornerstone pitcher Madison Bucilla then picked up a game-ending strikeout.

Calvin outhit Cornerstone 10-9 in the game two loss but stranded 10 baserunners. Prins went 3-for-4 to raise her season batting average to .394. DeWeerd had two doubles while Fri had two hits. Mast (8-13) took the hard-luck loss, going all eight innings while striking out three batters and walking three.
