Baseball/Softball Teams Fall to Davenport Monday Afternoon

BASEBALL
Davenport 6, Calvin 4

KENTWOOD - Calvin dipped to 10-15 overall with a 6-4 loss to Davenport University Monday afternoon at East Kentwood High School. The game followed a familiar pattern for the Knights as Calvin fell behind early only to mount a late comeback effort that fell just short.

Davenport (16-20) grabbed a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first after the Knights had taken a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring double in the top of the first by junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) that plated sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) from first.

Davenport then tacked on three unearned runs off Calvin starter Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) in the bottom of the third to build a 5-1 lead. Calvin countered with a solo home run to center in the fourth by Berger - his fourth of the season. A solo homer by Davenport in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Panthers into a 6-2 lead but the Knights rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth as freshman Grant Jobkar (Manchester, MI) drove in a run with a double and senior Chris Dykstra (Unity Christian HS) scored on a Davenport error. Calvin then had runners on second and third with two outs but could not score again as the game ended on a groundout to the pitcher.

Bosma was 2-for-3 for Calvin in defeat. Another bright spot for Calvin was the long relief effort turned in by sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe) who struck out a career-high nine batters without a walk in 4.1 innings of work. Lambers allowed just hits and did not permit a run to score during his time on the hill.

Calvin is back in action on Friday when it opens a four-game weekend series with a doubleheader at Olivet slated to start at 2 p.m.
