Baseball Drops Two at Hope;
Softball Falls at Olivet in Makeup Game

HOLLAND -- Calvin dropped a pair of games at Hope on Monday, falling 7-1 and 6-2. The Knights are now 5-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Defensive miscues cost Calvin in both games. In game one, Calvin committed three errors which led to four unearned runs. In game two, Calvin commited four errors which led to four more unearned runs. In game two, Calvin outhit Hope 8-6 but stranded eight baserunners.
Calvin grabbed a 2-1 lead in the nightcap but Hope came back with two runs in the bottom half to grab a 3-2 lead. Hope (14-4 overall, 7-1 MIAA) then put the game away by scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) took the loss for Calvin, allowing six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Spoelstra struck out six batters and walked three. Sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 3-for-3 in defeat for the Knights including a pair of doubles. Freshman Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH) also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
In game one, Hope jumped out on top with four runs in the bottom of the first, added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Calvin's lone run came in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring double by sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH). Calvin had six hits in defeat including three off the bat of junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS). Junior Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) took the loss for Calvin, allowing seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Calvin will now break until Friday when it hosts Albion in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.

OLIVET - Calvin dropped the second game of a doubleheader with Olivet, falling 4-2 in a game that had been postponed last Saturday because of weather. Calvin (5-6 overall, 1-3 MIAA) took a 2-0 lead in the first, using a pair of Olivet errors to score two unearned runs. Sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a muffed throw. Senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) also reached base on an error and scored on a groundout by junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON).
Calvin's bats were silenced the rest of the way however as the Knights collected just one hit off of Olivet starter Kelsey Greene. Olivet (9-9 overall, 3-1 MIAA) produced 12 hits and scored a run in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth.
Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss for Calvin, striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Hope at 3:30 p.m. in a conference doubleheader at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
