ADRIAN - A sterling pitching performance by junior Keith Spoelstra allowed Calvin to gain a split of a doubleheader at Adrian Monday afternoon. A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra scattered six hits over seven innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Eastern Christian High School graduate struck out six batters and walked only one. Spoelstra received all the run support he would need in the early innings as junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) drove in a run in the top of the first on a single to right and freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) added a run-scoring single in the second that brought home sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) who led of the inning with a triple.

Adrian (8-6 overall, 3-1 MIAA) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third but Calvin came back with an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Spoelstra was superb down the stretch, allowing just two hits over the final four innings.

Calvin (4-8 overall, 1-3 MIAA) outhit Adrian 8-6 in game two with Steiner going 2-for-4 at the plate.

In game one, Adrian gained a 4-0 victory despite Calvin holding a 7-6 hits advantage. Calvin committed three errors in the loss that led to a pair of unearned runs. Adrian scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Calvin starter Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) and added a run in the third and a run in the fifth. Meanwhile, Calvin stranded six baserunners. Senior Kyle Gurzysnki (Ludington HS) went 2-for-3 while sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 3-for-3. Cok also had a double. Groenwold had a strong effort despite being tagged with the loss, striking out seven and walking two in six innings of work.

The split on Monday allowed Adrian to take three of the four games in the season series with the Knights.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Hope in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.
