Baseball Team Drops Both End of Doubleheader With Adrian;
Men's Golf Takes 7th at Muskingum Invitational;
Men's Tennis Falls to Oglethorpe in Spring Break Finale

The defending MIAA champion Bulldogs of Adrian jumped on Calvin for a pair of victories Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field, defeating the Knights 9-3 and 7-2 in the MIAA openers for both teams.
Adrian (7-5 overall, 2-0 MIAA) grabbed the early momentum in both games, scoring two runs in the first inning of game one and six runs in the first inning of game two. In game one, Adrian scored two runs in the first and two more in the third before Calvin (3-7 overall, 0-2 MIAA) scored a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS). Adrian came back with two in the sixth and three more in the seventh to build a commanding 9-1 lead. Freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) then provided a late-game highlight by blasting his first collegiate homerun - a two-run shot over the left field wall that plated junior Matt Dodrill (Murfreesboro, TN) who led off the inning with a walk.
Senior Ben Sietsema (Northpointe Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 0-3 on the season. Sietsema struck out three batters and walked five in six innings of work. Sophomore Brett Cavanaugh (Western Michigan Christian HS) also tossed one inning of relief for the Knights. Senior Ryan Domschot (2-1) was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs, striking out seven and walking two in six innings of work.
In game two, Adrian used three hits, two walks, one hit batter and a Calvin error to score six runs in the top of the first inning against Calvin starter Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL). Steiner then settled down, allowing just one run and four hits over the next five innings. Calvin scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, using an RBI single by Gurzynski and and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) that scored a run.
Calvin outhit Adrian 9-7 in the game two loss but stranded 12 runners. Junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) and Gurzynski both went 2-for-4 for Calvin in the loss. Junior Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) also tossed one inning of scoreless relief. Steiner (1-1) took the loss, striking out four and walking two. Calvin committed three errors in the game that led to three unearned runs.
MEN'S GOLF
ZANESVILLE, OH -- The Calvin men's golf team took fourth in a field of nine teams at the two-day Muskingum Invitational at the Eaglesticks Golf Course with a 36-hole total of 613 strokes. Calvin opened the tournament with a day one score of 317 and then fired a sizzling score of 296 on Saturday. Malone was first with a two-day total of 558 strokes while Mount Union was second (603) and Otterbein third (611). Calvin's top individual finisher was freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a total of 148 (79-69) strokes. Senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's next man, tied for 11th with a total of 152 strokes (78-74).
Other finishers for Calvin included freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo Christian HS) in a tie for 17th place with a total of 156 strokes (79-77), sophomore Jake DeBoer (South Christian HS) in a tie for 20th place (81-76-157) and junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a two-day total of 162 (81-81). Other individual finishers for Calvin included senior Tyler Smies (Sheboygan, WI) in a tie for 33rd (77-84-161), sophomore Brennan Volbeda (Holland Christian HS) in a tie for 41st (85-79-164) and freshman Mike Fennema (South Christian HS) in a tie for 51st (83-83-169).
Calvin is back in action on April 7 when it competes at the Furniture City Classic at the Stonewater Country Club.
MEN'S TENNIS
Oglethorpe 5, Calvin 3
ORLANDO, FL - Calvin concluded its spring break trip with a 5-3 loss to Ogelthorpe University Friday morning. The Knights are now 5-4 on the season. Calvin opened the match with early momentum, gaining wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH) and junior Roland Eldridge (Charlotte, NC) picked up an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles while sophomore Jon Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) and junior Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) were 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Oglethorpe turned the tables on Calvin in single play however, picking up wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 singles. Calvin's lone win came at No. 5 singles with sophomore Brian DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) picking up a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Freshman Philip Reinken (Morton, IL) also had a match underway at No. 6 singles but with final outcome decided, his match was not completed, creating the final 5-3 score.
Calvin is back in action next Friday when it travels to Earlham University next Friday at 4 p.m.
