Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Team Post NCAA III Qualifying Marks at Grand Valley State Big Meet;
Women's Tennis Opens Season With 9-0 Win Over Davenport
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE - The first day of competition at the Grand Valley State Big Meet was indeed big for the Calvin men's and women's indoor track and field teams Friday night as both teams posted a handful of NCAA III qualifying times for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
In the women's competition, junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) took eighth in the 400 meters with an NCAA III indoor automatic qualifying time of 56.43. The time is the fastest in NCAA III indoor women's track and field this winter. Also posting a solid NCAA III provisional qualifying time was senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 18th place time of 17:33.13.
On the men's side, senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) clocked an automatic qualifying time of 14:26.56 in the men's 5,000 meters. The time is the fastest in NCAA III indoor men's track and field this winter. Also recording a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time from Calvin in the 5,000 meters was sophomore Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN) with a time of 14:38.37. In the 800 meters, junior Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN) had an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:54.49 that was good for 17th place.
Both Calvin teams will continue competition at the two-day Grand Valley State Big Meet Saturday afternoon.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Davenport 0
The Calvin women's tennis team opened its 2010 season with a 9-0 non-conference win over visiting Davenport University Friday afternoon inside Calvin's Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights return to action on February 26, traveling to North Central College (IL) for a non-conference match.
