CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 15, 2009

NCAA III Opponents Come Into View For Calvin Men's and Women's Soccer Teams For Round of 16;
Swimming and Diving Teams Defeat Albion In Dual Meets;
ACHA Hockey Team Now 10-1-0-1 after Weekend Play With Oakland

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER

The upcoming opponents for the Calvin men's and women's soccer teams are now in place for the third round of the NCAA III Tournament. The Calvin men's soccer team (16-4-1) will face a Carnegie-Mellon (PA) team which defeated Medaille (NY) 1-0 earlier this afternoon. Carnegie-Mellon (16-2-1) was the co-champion of the University Athletic Association this fall. The Calvin/Carnegie-Mellon game will be a rematch of a first round NCAA III Tournament game from a year ago with Carnegie-Mellon defeating Calvin 3-0. The other two teams in the sectional bracket will include Swarthmore (16-2-2) and Transylvania (16-3-1). Carnegie-Mellon has also been selected to host the sectional Friday and Saturday (November 20 and 21). Game times will be announced on Monday.

On the women's side, Calvin (15-4-1) will face College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champion Augustana (IL) as part of a four-team sectional. The sectional will also include Wheaton (IL) and Washington University of St. Louis. Augustana (20-1-1) defeated Albion 2-1 in a first round game on Saturday and Wisconsin-Stevens Point 1-0 this evening in a second round game. Wheaton (17-4-1) advanced with a 3-1 win over Carleton and a 1-0 win over the University of Chicago. Washington University of St. Louis (16-3-1) advanced with a 2-1 win over Webster (MO) and a 1-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan. The site along with times and dates for the four-team sectional has not yet been announced.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams were in dual meet action at Albion on Saturday and both teams came away with victories with the men winning by a 171-124 score and the women winning 149-129.

Highlights for the Calvin men included first place finishes from:

*Sophomore Ross Battoclette in the 200 backstroke (2:06.30)

*Freshman Stephen Kraft in the 200 IM (2:09.21)

*Freshman Kyle Garringer in the 100 backstroke (56.50)

*Freshman Mark Rushlow in the 100 butterfly (54.99) and 200 butterfly (2:07.76)

*Senior Kurt Van Allsburg in the 50 freestyle (23.12) and 100 freestyle (50.71)

*Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team (1:31.07) & 200 medley relay team (1:43.43).

Highlights for the Calvin women included first place finishes from:

*Senior Laura Price in the 1,000 freestyle (11:01.11)

*Freshman Shelby Cloyd im the 200 freestyle (2:02.56)

*Freshman Stephanie Fox in the 100 backstroke (1:01.45) and 200 backstroke (2:14.38)

*Freshman Rachel Colasurdo in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.45)

*Freshman Elizabeth Counsel in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.00)

*senior Maggie Vail in the 50 freestyle (25.66) and 100 freestyle (55.42)

*Senior Casey Herman one the one-meter diving board (230.25) with freshman Sam Klaasen scoring 211.35, junior Carmen Brummel scoring 203.30 and senior Joy Leach 196.60)

*Brummel on the three-meter board with a career-best score of 229.35 with Herman third at 221.40 and Klaasen fourth at 208.44.

*Calvin's 200 medley relay team (1:45.66).

*The Calvin women's swimming and diving team is now 2-1 in dual meet competition while the Calvin men's team is 1-2. Both teams return to action next Saturday, hosting Division II Wayne State at the Venema Aquatic Center in non-conference dual meets.

ACHA HOCKEY

Calvin's ACHA hockey team dropped a 6-5 shootout decision at regionally-ranked Oakland on Friday night but came back to defeat the Grizzlies in Grand Rapids on Saturday night by a 4-3 decision. In the shootout Friday night, Calvin and Oakland battled to a 5-5 tie through overtime but Oakland won the shootout. Despite the shootout loss, Calvin picked up one point. With Saturday's 4-3 win, the Knights are now 10-1-0-1 (10 wins, one loss, no ties, one shootout loss).

In Friday's game, Calvin picked up two goals from Justin Blaauwendraat and one goal each from Mike Berkel, Scott Plakmeyer and Ben Brandsen.In Saturday's win, Calvin picked up goals from Adam VanOpstall, John Kersaan, Mike Berkel and Chuck Hofbauer.

Calvin returns to action this Friday, hosting Lansing Community College at 8:00 p.m. at the Jolly Roger Ice Arena. The Knights will then travel to Lansing Community College on Saturday for a 9:00 p.m. game at The Summit at Capital Center.
