Calvin Volleyball/Hockey Teams To Raise Cancer Awareness & Funds for Cancer Research Friday Night

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Calvin women's volleyball team and the Calvin ACHA hockey team will be raising cancer awareness and funds for cancer research Friday night.

The volleyball team will be participating in the Dig for a Cure drive, sponsored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association during its home match with Adrian Friday at the Van Noord Arena at 6:30 p.m. As part of the evening's events, players from both teams will be wearing pink uniform attire. Calvin volleyball players have been accepting pledges for the drive with all donations going to the American Cancer Society. Pledges include donations for each dig recorded by a player as well as direct donations and pledges for the drive.

Friday's match will be aired via Stretch Internet broadcast (quick time player) beginning at 6:25 p.m. with the broadcast link at: secure.stretchinternet.com/demo/games.php?user=calvin&o=cal_stamp

Meanwhile, the Calvin ACHA hockey team will be teaming up with the Van Andel Research Institute Friday night to raise awareness for breast cancer when it hosts non-conference rival Dordt (IA) in a 7:00 p.m. (EST) game at the Jolly Roger Ice Arena. Before and during the game, t-shirts commemorating the evening and breast cancer research will be sold for $3.00 each. With the purchase of a game ticket, t-shirts will be only $2.00. Ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. Tickets with a t-shirt include will be $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.

Before the game, Calvin president Dr. Gaylen Byker will drop the first puck and will be joined on the ice by an individual who has battled breast cancer.

All proceeds from the game - including the entire gate and t-shirt sales will be donated to the Van Andel Institute for cancer research.

The game will be pit a Calvin team that is off to a 4-0 start against a Dordt team that reached the ACHA Division III playoffs a year ago and is currently 1-0-1. A year ago, Dordt finished 24-4-1-2 with one of its four losses coming in a 5-2 defeat to Calvin. The Calvin victory helped propel the Knights to the championship of the Dordt-hosted Cob Cup Tournament.
