ANGOLA, IN -- The Calvin women's soccer team remained in sole possession of
first place in the MIAA standings with a 5-0 victory at Trine University
Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 12-4 overall and 6-1-0 in the MIAA,
remaining three-points ahead of second place Adrian (5-2-0 MAA). Kalamazoo is
five points behind Calvin but has two league games left to play while the
Knights (and Adrian) have just one. Calvin's remaing league game is set for
October 28 when the Knights host rival Hope at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema
Field.
After taking a 1-0 halftime lead on a late first half goal by sophomore Kim
Schmitikons, Calvin broke loose in the second half, scoring three goals in a
16-minute span with freshman Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN) beginning the
scoring spurt with a goal in the 54th minute off a feed from junior Mindy
Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). Senior Krista Johnson then scored
in the 69th minute off a pass from senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL)
and freshman Liz Cancel (Fraser) followed with a goal one minute later to put
the Knights up 4-0.
Calvin closed out the scoring with 3:38 left to play on a goal by senior
Allison Boender (Calvin Christian HS) off a corner kick.
Calvin held a 36-0 shots at goal advantage with senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer
(St. Charles, MO) collecting her 10th shutout victory of the year including the
11th shutout of her career.

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Trine 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-11)
(written by sports information student assistant Andrew Knot)
Led by a big-blocking defense and aggressive serving, the Knights of Calvin
College found lightning in a bottle and handedly defeated the Trine University
Thunder on Tuesday Oct. 20 in the Van Noord Arena.
Calvin swept the Thunder in three sets, a much more convincing result than the
5-set barnburner between the schools at Trine earlier in the season. Calvin
also won that match.
In the first set, defense sparked the Knights. Calvin outblocked Trine 12 to
1.5 in the match. After rallying to a 13-9 lead in set one, Calvin forced a
Trine timeout. The Knights came out of the huddle strong with sophomores
Rebecca Kamp and Erin VanderPlas contributing blocks that helped Calvin create
a six point deficit. Kamp concluded the set with some thunder of her own,
slamming a kill through the block and giving Calvin a 25-19 victory in the
first set.
“It’s always important to set the tone early. I thought we really shut
them down on the front line,” said Coach Amber Warners.
But the Knights also got plenty of defense from the back. Senior libero
Kelsey Sears led the Knights with 16 of the team’s 38 digs. In the second
set, Calvin jumped out to a 9-3 lead and never looked back. VanderPlas
contributed one of Calvin’s six aces on the day late in the set to solidify
another 25-19 win.
The Knights extinguished any hopes of a Trine comeback in the third set,
jumping out to a 10-0 margin early. Senior Katie Corbett served the Knights to
that early lead, with two aces of her own. Calvin rolled to a 25-11 victory,
taking the match in straight sets.
The victory propelled Calvin to a 10-1 MIAA record, and leaves Trine at 5-7 in
conference.
Coach Warners looks for her team to find some consistent passion and fire in
the remainder of the season.
“We are playing better and more consistent, but we still need to get that
fire. When we can get that piece: Look out,” said Warners.
