Calvin Basketball Teams Receive National Rankings by DIII News/WDIII News;
John Mantel Receives Pre-Season All-America Recognition

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men's and women's basketball teams are both ranked nationally in the preseason issues of DIII News and WDIII News respectively.

In the DIII News preseason top 25 poll, Calvin is ranked 18th. Defending national champion Washington University of St. Louis is the preseason number-one ranked team. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the preseason top 25 poll as Hope is ranked 11th.

Meanwhile, the Calvin women's basketball team is ranked 20th in the WDIII News preseason top 25 poll. Defending national champion George Fox (OR) is the preseason number-one ranked team. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the preseason WDIII News poll as defending MIAA champion Hope is ranked third.

In addition, Calvin senior center John Mantel of Chelsea (Chelsea HS) has been named a preseason All-American by DIII News. A 6-9 center, Mantel averaged 13.6 points and 7.3 rebounds a game last year and landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team. Mantel has also been named a preseason honorable All-American by The Sporting News in its preseason college basketball publication.

Other players that have received preseason All-America recognition from DIII News that Calvin will face this year include Steve Djurickovic of Carthage, Kyle Meyer of Ohio Northern and Peter Bunn (honorable mention) of Hope. Calvin will face Carthage on December 4, Ohio Northern on December 29 and Hope on January 6 and January 30.

On the women's side, preseason All-America selections by WDIII News that Calvin is scheduled to face this year include Carrie Snikkers of Hope and Lyndsie Long (honorable mention) of Elmhurst. Calvin will face Elmhurst on November 27 and Hope on January 19 and February 3. Calvin may also face Wilmington in a tipoff tournament on November 21. Kortney Kin of Wilmington has also been name a preseason All-American by WDIII News.

The Calvin men's basketball season is coming off a 19-8 campaign including a 12-2 mark that was good for an outright MIAA title. The Calvin women's basketball team is coming off a 16-10 season including a 9-7 mark in league play that was good for a third place league finish.

The Calvin men's and women's basketball teams both open practice for the upcoming 2009-10 season today.
