Men's Golf Ties For Second in Final MIAA Standings;
Women's Soccer Upset at Alma - MIAA Win Streak Snapped

MEN'S GOLF

WEST OLIVE - The Calvin men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for
second place in the final MIAA standings, posting a team score of 309 on
Wednesday at the final MIAA Jamboree of the year. Hope hosted the MIAA Jamboree
at the Wuskowhan Players Club. Albion took first place on Wednesday with a
sizzling score of 291 to make up 18 strokes on Calvin while Trine fired a round
of 297 to also catch the Knights and create a three-way tie for second place.

Calvin was led by senior Jon Kuiper with a round of 73 that left him with a
final season average of 74.0 strokes-per-round which was good for second place
in the final MIAA individual standings. The average breaks the previous Calvin
record of 75.9 set by Jeff TenBrink in 2005. It is also Calvin’s highest
individual MIAA finish since Phil Rietema was second in 2003. Kuiper also
earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team. In addition, junior Jess Hendriksma
had a 75 on Wednesday to finish with a season average of 75.8 that also broke
the previous Calvin record. Hendriksma finished 10th in the final league
standings and earned a spot on the All-MIAA second team.

Rounding out Calvin’s scores on Wednesday were freshman Ben Kuiper with an
80, junior Eric Doezema with an 81 and freshman Dave Sarkipato with an 82.

Andy Wolf of Trine was Wednesday’s medalist with a round of 69.

Hope clinched the MIAA title on Wednesday with a team score of 297, tying for
second place individually. The title is Hope’s ninth in the last 11 years.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Alma 2, Calvin 1

ALMA - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team was upset at Alma on
Wednesday, falling 2-1. The loss is Calvin’s first to an MIAA opponent since
2005 when the Knights were defeated by Hope. The loss also drops Calvin into a
tie for first place in the MIAA standings with Adrian as the Bulldogs defeated
Albion Wednesday 1-0. Calvin and Adrian are now both 4-1-0 in league play
heading into a Saturday morning showdown at Adrian’s Performance Stadium
slated to start at 10:00 a.m. Kalamazoo also won on Wednesday and along with
Alma is just two points (3-1-1) behind Calvin and Adrian in the standings.

The loss snaps a 40-game unbeaten streak by Calvin against MIAA opponents with
the Knights recording a 39-0-1 record during the streak.

In Wednesday’s game at Alma, the host Scots jumped on the Knights in the
opening minutes, scoring a goal just 2:56 into the match. Calvin (10-4-0
overall) came back to tie the game on a penalty kick by senior Emily Ottenhoff
with 14:06 left in the first half. Alma scored the game-winning goal however in
the 64th minute of play on a header by Hannah Bauhof.

Calvin finished the game with a 15-6 shots at goal advantage but Alma
goalkeepers Katie Weicksel and Monica Witt combined to make seven saves. Calvin
senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer had two saves for the Knights.

NOTES: Calvin entered Wednesday’s game ranked 22nd by
D3soccer.com…Wednesday’s game marked the second time Calvin has allowed a
goal in the opening three minutes as the Knights also gave up a goal 2:50 into
its match against the University of Chicago on September 15….Calvin has outshot
its opponent in all four of its losses this year…Calvin senior Emily Ottenhoff
is now 7-for-7 during her career on penalty kick opportunities
