Women's Soccer Nipped At Wheaton;
Men's Golf Moves Into Sole Possession of Second Place in MIAA Standings;
Women's Golf Captures Alma Invitational

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Wheaton 1, Calvin 0

WHEATON, IL -- Calvin outshot fourth-ranked Wheaton 13-9 late Saturday afternoon but the fourth-ranked Thunder came away with a 1-0 victory. The loss is Calvin's third straight. All three losses have come against Central Region opponents (Chicago, Washington U. and Wheaton) and all have come by shutout scores.

Wheaton (8-1) scored the only goal of the game in the 12th minute of play as Ali Kopelman redirected a cross into the box past Calvin goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS). Calvin nearly tied the gamee late in the first half on a rush up the left wing by junior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) but a Wheaton defender was able to deflect Schnabel's shot wide of the goal.

Schnabel led Calvin with three shots including two on goal. Senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and junior Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also were credited with two shots apiece.

Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto posted six saves in gaining the shutout win.

Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

MEN'S GOLF

ANGOLA, IN -- Calvin moved into sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings on Saturday, posting a third place team score of 302 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine University at the Zollner Golf Club. The Knights are now in a fierce fight for second place in the overall standins as Trine moved within a stroke of the Knights with a first place team score of 287 on Saturday. Hope took second with a score of 290 to widen its overall lead in the MIAA standings to 25 strokes with three league outings left to play.

Calvin's top golfer on Saturday was junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 73 that left him tied for eighth place individually. Senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) were close behind with rounds of 75 that were good for a 13th place tie on Saturday. Rounding out Calvin's finishers were junior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 79.

Steven Strock and Charles Olson of Hope shared medalist honors with rounds of 70.

Calvin returns to action on Monday when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Player's Club at 1:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF

ALMA -- Calvin had a banner day Saturday afternoon, winning the Alma Invitational at the Pine River Country Club with a season-best team score of 343 strokes. Calvin had four golfers fire rounds under 90 led by senior Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who carded a season-best score of 84 which was good for third place individually. Senior Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were right behind with rounds of 86 while senior Julienne Louters (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 87 and senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) a career-best round of 92.

Erica Mazur of Albion and Paige Scarpace of Rochester College shared medalist honors with rounds of 82.

Albion took second place as a team with a score of 354 with Alma third at 357. Rochester College had three individuals compete but did not have the required four golfers to post a final team score.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club at 1:00 p.m.
