Carolyn Nelson Named MIAA's Volleyball Specialty Player of the Week;
Greg Snapper Named MIAA's Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
VOLLEYBALL
For the first time in her career, Calvin College junior setter Carolyn Nelson
has been named the MIAA's Volleyball Specialty Player of the Week. A native of
Milan (Mich.) and a graduate of Milan High School, Nelson dished out 67
assists (11.2 per set) in directing the Knights’ offense in three-set sweeps
of Albion and Kalamazoo. Nelson also totaled eight digs in the two matches.
Nelson is currently averaging 9.65 assists-per-set.
Ranked 12th in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin returns to
action on Wednesday when it journeys to Trine for a 6:30 p.m. conference match.
The Knights are currently 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.
MEN'S SOCCER
For the fourth time in his collegiate career, Calvin sweeper back Greg Snapper
has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer. A senior
from Madison, Wis. (Madison West HS), Snapper led a strong Calvin defense at
the Knights posted a pair of wins at the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament.
Snapper’s play helped the Knights defeat Wheaton, Ill., 2-1 and 12th-ranked
Kenyon, Ohio, 1-0. Calvin has allowed only two goals in its first four games of
the season.
Calvin returns to action this Friday and Saturday, competing at a tournament
hosted by Wittenberg University. Calvin will face Otterbein Friday at 5:00 p.m.
on the first day of competition and will then meet host Wittenberg on Saturday
at 4:0 p.m.
The Knights are currently 3-1 overall. In posting wins over Wheaton and Kenyon
last weekend, Calvin captured its fourth overall Cal Bergsma title including
its first since 2006.
