Men's Soccer Captures Cal Bergsma Memorial Championship;
Women's Soccer Blanks Kenyon - Remains Unbeaten
MEN'S SOCCER

GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin defeated 12th-ranked Kenyon 1-0 Saturday afternoon on
the second day of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament and in the process,
captured the tournament championship for the first time since 2006 and for the
fourth time overall.
Senior Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch HS) scored the only goal of the
game in the 47th minute of play, redirecting a cross from senior Michael
Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) into a wide-open goal.
The match was an evenly-played contest as both teams finished with 12 shots
apiece.
Calvin sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) was superb for
Calvin in nets, recording five saves including a pair of key stops on throwins
into the box in the second half.
Calvin is now 3-1-0 overall and will face Otterbein next Friday night in a
tournament hosted by Wittenberg University next Friday.
The Calvin Bergsma Memorial Tournament Bergsma Memorial Tournament honors the
memory of Dr. Calvin Bergsma who died tragically in a car accident during the
summer of 2001.
In Saturday's other second round game, Wheaton defeated Hope 1-0.
A 1967 graduate of Calvin College, Dr. Bergsma was a West Michigan urologist
who was known as a kind-hearted man who cared deeply for everyone. Dr. Bergsma
was particularly close to his friends at both Calvin College and Hope College.
He had family ties to both institutions as his wife Gwen (1968) and son Corwyn
(1996) are Calvin graduates while his son Clayton is a graduate (2000) of Hope
College. Clayton was a four-year member of the Hope men’s soccer team while
Corwyn was a four-year member of the Calvin men’s basketball program.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

GRAND RAPIDS -- The 24th-ranked Calvin women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0
victory over visiting Kenyon College Saturday afternoon at Calvin's Zuidema
Field. The Knights scored three times in the first half including twice on
corner kick plays.
Senior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) put the Knights on the
board in the sixth minute of play, converting a cross into the box from junior
Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). The Knights then struck for two
goals just a minute apart midway through the first half - both coming off of
corner kicks from junior Mindy Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
Senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) converted the
first corner kick, heading in Capisciolto's serve in the 29th minute of play.
One minute later, Prins headed in her fourth goal of the year off a corner from
Capisciolto.
Calvin's final goal came in the 53rd minute with senior Natalie Veurink
(Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) ripping in her team-leading fifth
goal of the year after receiving a through-ball pass from Schnabel.
Calvin (6-0-0) outshot Kenyon (1-4-0) 20-6. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer
(St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) had three saves in nets to collect her fifth
shutout victory of the year.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to 15th-ranked University
of Chicago for a 4:00 p.m. (CST) match. The contest will be a rematch of a
second round NCAA III Tournament game from last November which ended in a 0-0
draw with Chicago advancing by way of a penalty kick shootout.
MEN'S GOLF
ALMA -- Calvin moved into third place in the MIAA overall standings with a
third place finish at the second MIAA jamboree of the year, posting a third
place team score of 302 strokes, just one stroke behind Adrian and four strokes
back of Hope.
Adrian continues to hold first place in the overall standings with a two-round
total of 600 strokes with Hope close behind at 603. Calvin is in third at 609
followed by Olivet and Trine at 612.
In Saturday's jamboree, hosted b Alma at the Pine River Country Club, Calvin
was led by senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior
Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Ben
Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 75, leaving the
trio in a tie for fifth place individually.
Freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also had a strong
performance with a round of 77 which was good for a tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) rounded out Calvin's
finishers with a round of 81.
Nick Campbell of Hope was the medalist Saturday with a round of 70.
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it competes at a league jamboree
hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club at 1:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF
MARSHALL -- Calvin finished in 14th place at the Olivet Fall Invitational held
at the Medalist Golf Club, posting a two-day team total of 797 strokes. After a
promising first day total of 389 strokes, the Knights slipped back with a team
score of 408 on day two.
Hope won the tournament with a team total of 658 strokes, one stroke ahead of
host Olivet.
Calvin's top individual finisher was senior Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS) with a total of 183 (85-98) which placed her in a tie for
39th place in the final individual standings. She was followed by freshman
Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 203 (94-109) with
senior Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) next at 206
(108-98). Rounding out Calvin's finishers were senior Julienne Louters (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 208 (104-104) and senior Rachel
Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) with a 214 (106-108).
Amber Conrad of Olivet was the tournament medalist with a two-day total of 151
(74-77).
Calvin returns to action next Thursday when it competes at the first MIAA
jamboree of the year. The jamboree will be hosted by Albion at the Medalist
Golf Club at 1:00 p.m.
