Women's Soccer Wins Ohio Northern Classic;
Men's Soccer Nipped by Ohio Wesleyan in Fred Myers Invitational Championship Final;
Volleyball Takes Second at ONU Invitational;
Men's Golf Places 12th at Lou Collins Olivet College Memorial Classic
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Ohio Northern 0
ADA, OH -- Calvin captured the championship of the Ohio Northern Classic, defeating host Ohio Northern (2-1-0) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, concluding the tournament as the only unbeaten, untied team.
Ranked 17th nationally, Calvin (3-0-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) with Prins heading in a corner kick with junior Lauren Heyboer (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play. The goal by Prins came just 5:24 into the match.
Senior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) then scored her fourth goal of the year to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Veurink scored in the 18th minute after dribbling through traffic and beating the goalkeeper with a hard shot.
Senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) put the capper on the win, scoring on a penalty kick in the 60th minute after the Polar Bears were whistled for a hand ball in the box. Calvin held a 17-6 shots at goal advantage with senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) picking up three saves in gaining her third shutout victory of the year.
In Saturday's first match, Otterbein defeated Kalamazoo 3-0.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Madonna University at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

MEN'S SOCCER
Ohio Wesleyan 1, Calvin 0
DELAWARE, OH -- The men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to host and 15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in the championship final of the Fred Meyers Invitational. The only goal of the game came on a penalty kick by Ohio Wesleyan's Jordan Halloran with just 4:57 left in regulation.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Calvin 12-7.
Sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) had five saves for the Knights including a key stop on an Ohio Wesleyan breakaway attempt.
Calvin (1-1-0) landed three players on the all-tournament team as senior Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), sophomore Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) and junior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville HS) were so honored.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts 23rd-ranked Wheaton (IL) at 4:00 p.m. on the first day of competition of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Classic.
VOLLEYBALL
ADA, OH -- Calvin finished second at the two-day Ohio Northern Invitational, posting a 3-1 tournament record. After splitting a pair of matches on Friday, Calvin rebounded to upset eighth-ranked Southwestern (TX) and then defeat Heidelberg in a pair of five-set matches.
Calvin opened the day with a 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 25-13, 15-12 win over Southwestern. Sophomore Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) led the attack with 21 kills and 12 digs while junior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Chandler Valley Christian HS) had a big performance with 15 kills and nine digs. Setter Carolyn Nelson (Milan/Milan HS) had 49 assists while back row specialists Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) and Katie Corbet (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) had 27 and 24 digs respectively. Sophomore Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) also had 19 digs.
The Knights then edged Heidelberg 7-25, 18-25, 26-24, 12-25, 15-8. Rebecca Kamp had 18 kills while sophomore Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Northern Michigan Christian HS) had 10 kills and Wigboldy nine kills. Sears and Corbett had 19 digs apiece while Nelson had 34 assists and 10 digs. Corbett also had nine service aces.
For their efforts, (Rebecca) Kamp and Sears were named to the all tournament team.

MEN'S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK -- Calvin finished in ninth place in the final standings of the two-day Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Classic held at the Bedford Valley Country Club, posting a two-day team score of 614 strokes. After an opening day total of 304 strokes, Calvin came up with a second day total of 310 strokes. Freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) both had rounds of 75 with Sarkipato finishing in a tie for sixth place individually in the final standings. Senior Kyle Harvey (Willard, OH/Willard HS) also had a 78 while junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had rounds of 82.
Calvin also had a second team competing at the tournament which placed 12th with a two-day total of 624 (315-309). Sophomore Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) led the backup squad with rounds of 76 and 75. Also competing for the backup team were senior Tyler Smies (Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan County Christian HS) with rounds of 78 and 79, sophomore Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 83 and 75, sophomore Brennan Volbeda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with scores of 78 and 80 and freshman Michael Fennema (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) with rounds of 83 and 80.
Indiana Wesleyan won the tournament with a final total of 580 strokes (291, 289) with Jimmy Velmen of Madonna earning tournament medalist honors with a tournament score of 142 (70-72).
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it competes at the first MIAA outing of the year. The outing like this weekend, will be held at the Bedford Valley Country Club with Olivet serving as host.
