Otterbein (1-1) entered the match ranked eighth in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll compiled by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America while Calvin (2-0) came in ranked 17th. Otterbein had Calvin back on its heels early on, firing the first six shots of the contest and hitting the post on one. Calvin rebounded however to match the Otterbein attack and took a 1-0 lead on a 20-yard blast by junior Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 25th minute of play with senior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Freshman Jillian Honderd (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) then scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, ripping in a loose ball from the 18 just two minutes after the tally by Prins. Honderd then scored on a breakaway with just 3:04 left in the first half to give the Knights a commanding lead.

Otterbein held a 10-8 shots at goal advantage but Calvin senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) was up to the task, compiling three saves to gain her second shutout victory of the year.
