Calvin Tennis Teams/Players Receive ITA All-Academic Honors
For the sixth straight year, the Calvin men's tennis team has received the
prestigious All-Academic Team Award from the International Tennis Association
(ITA). The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a
cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).
The Calvin women’s tennis team has also received the award, doing so for the
second straight year.
Led by ninth-year head coach Jerry Bergsma. The Calvin women’s tennis team
posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.663.
Under the direction of sixth-year head coach John Ross, the Calvin men's
tennis team posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.238.
In addition, seven members of the Calvin women's tennis team and four members
of the Calvin women’s tennis team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete
accolades. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player needed to have
been a varsity letter winner and posted a grade point average of at least a
3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the recent 2008-09 academic year.
Receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete honors from the Calvin women's tennis team are
sophomore Abigal Belford (Batavia, IL/Batavia HS), junior Kelsey Bushhouse
(Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS), sophomore Michelle Busscher (Whitehall/Western
Michigan Christian HS). junior Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL/Timothy Christian
HS), sophomore Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS),
sophomore Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and junior Rachel
Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS).
Receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete honors from the men's tennis team are sophomore
Matthew DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS), sophomore Roland
Eldridge (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg HS) and graduated seniors Nick
Steenstra (Allendale/Unity Christian HS) and Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville,
IN/Zionsville Community HS).
The Calvin women's tennis team posted an overall dual match record of 13-8
this past spring. The Knights also finished in second place in the final MIAA
standings.
