Van Woerkom, Oosterhouse and Deur Receive ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District IV Honors

GRAND RAPIDS - Three Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division. Senior
Cara Van Woerkom and sophomore Melissa Oosterhouse have been named to the
all-district first team while senior Erica Deur has been named to the
all-district second team.

As members of the first team, Van Woerkom and Oosterhouse now advance to the
national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ®
consideration.

A native of Wyoming and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School,
Van Woerkom is making her second straight appearance on the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District team. In addition, she was named an ESPN the Magazine
Second Team Academic All-American a year ago.

A four-year member of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team, Van Woerkom
was a standout in the freestyle events, earning NCAA III All-America honors
eight times during her collegiate career. At the NCAA III Swimming and Diving
Championships this past March, Van Woerkom helped Calvin finish seventh as a
team by finishing 13th in the 50 freestyle and swimming on Calvin’s All-America
400 medley, 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay teams. A two-time All-MIAA
selection, Van Woerkom was also a part of four MIAA championship teams. She
was the 2008 MIAA champion in the 50 freestyle and was the league runner-up in
the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events in 2009.

A Spanish major with a minor in biology, Van Woerkom carries a 3.91 grade point
average. She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin Medical School next
fall.

Oosterhouse is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian
High School. She is receiving ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors
for the first time.

A member of the Calvin women’s tennis team, Oosterhouse has been a two-year
starter at the No. 1 singles position, compiling a career singles mark of
34-10. Oosterhouse was 18-5 in singles play in 2008 and 16-5 in 2009. A
two-time first team All-MIAA selection, Oosterhouse also had a 13-8 doubles
(No. 1) record in 2009 and a 14-10 (No. 1) mark in 2008.

She has helped Calvin to back-to-back MIAA runner-up finishes. At the
conclusion of the 2009 MIAA Tournament, she was named the recipient of the
prestigious MIAA Sue Little Sportsmanship Award – becoming the first Calvin
player since In the most recent set of ITA Central Region singles rankings,
Oosterhouse was ranked eighth.

Oosterhouse carries a 3.92 grade point average while majoring in biology while
minoring in chemistry and Spanish.

Like Oosterhouse, Deur is receiving all-district honors for the first time. A
native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Deur was an
eight-time NCAA III All-American as a diver on the Calvin women’s swimming and
diving team. She was a two-time national champion on the one-meter board and a
two-time national runner-up on the three-meter board.
Deur was named the Division III Women’s Diver of the Year in both 2007 and 2009
and helped Calvin earn four consecutive top 10 national team finishes. She was
also a part of four MIAA championship teams and was named the MIAA’s Most
Valuable Diver four straight years after winning four league titles on both the
one and three-meter boards.

Deur holds both Calvin and MIAA records on the one and three-meter boards and
is the NCAA III record holder on the one-meter board.

A community recreation major at Calvin, Deur carries a 3.48 grade point
average.

The college division of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program
includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Academic All-District and
All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information
Director'sAssociation of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an
individual must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimu3.30. The at-large division includes the sports of of golf, tennis, swimming,
waterpolo, ice hockey, field hockey and lacrosse.
