Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten - Harris Moves Into Second Place on Calvin
Career Scoring List

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 81, Kalamazoo 64

KALAMAZOO -- Calvin improved to 4-0 on the season and senior Marcia Harris
(Grand Rapids Christian High School) moved into second place on the all-time
Calvin scoring list Tuesday evening as the Knights recorded an 81-64 victory at
Kalamazoo College in the league opener for both teams.

Harris scored 18 points to boost her career scoring total to 1,335 points,
moving past 1999 Calvin graduate Kerry Walters-Dykstra for second place on the
all-time Calvin list.

Harris shared team scoring honors with junior teammate Brook Van Eck (Lowell
HS) who scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting while Harris was 7-of-12 from the
field. As a team, Calvin shot 56.4 percent from the floor including 60 percent
in the first half with the Knights taking a 43-31 lead at halftime.

Calvin connected on 6-of-8 attempts from beyond the three-point arc in the
first half in building a double-digit lead. Calvin would later build a 27-point
lead in the second half before the Hornets rallied to cut the deficit down to
12 with 2:12 remaining.

Freshman Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns HS) continued her strong play off the
bench with 10 points while freshman teammate Jill Thomas (West Catholic HS) had
nine points in a reserve role.

Senior Kristi Brummel (South Christian HS) also had nine points along with
five assists. She nailed a pair of three-pointers in the first half and was
credited with four rebounds. Junior Amber Benthem (McBain Christian HS) chipped
in with eight points and three assists while senior Sarah Partridge (East
Lansing HS) matched Brummel in assists with five.

"One of the keys to this game was that were able to hit some open looks from
the perimeter in the first half," said Calvin women's basketball coach John
Ross. "Kalamazoo was really packing it in on Marcia (Harris) defensively and
once our guards started knocking down three's, it opened things up."

Ross also credited the play of Van Eck inside. "Brook isn't the biggest player
out there but there aren't more players that have more heart than she does,"
said Ross. "She finds a way to score and rebound, even though she is sometimes
outsized."

As for Harris, Ross gave a tip of the cap to his senior for moving up the
Calvin career scoring list. "Marcia has had a great career at Calvin and it
isn't over yet which we are happy for because she is playing some of her best
basketball," he said.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens play at the Julie Costello
Classic hosted by Thomas More College (KY). Calvin will open tournament play on
Friday at 2:00 p.m. against NAIA Division I opponent St. Catharine of Kentucky.
On Saturday, Calvin will face host Thomas More which is currently ranked fifth
in the most recent ESPN Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Top
25 poll and seventh in the D3hoops.com Top-25 poll.
