Caleb Veldhouse/Marcia Harris Named Pre-Season All-Americans by Division III Publication

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin College seniors Caleb Veldhouse and Marcia Harris have been named pre-season All-Americans in men's and women's basketball respectively. Veldhouse has been named a pre-season All-American by Division III News while Harris has been so honored by sister publication Women's Division III News.

Veldhouse is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a graduate of Sioux Falls Christian High School. A year ago, he averaged 17.2 points and 3.1 rebounds a game while landing a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year.

Harris is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. She averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 rebounds a game last year.

Neither the Calvin men's basketball team or Calvin women's basketball team is ranked in the respective pre-season Top-25 polls by the publications although the Calvin men's team has been listed as a "team to watch" just outside of the Top 25 by DIII News.

Albion is ranked 25th in the pre-season DIII News poll while Hope is listed along with Calvin and several other schools as a "team to watch." In addition to Hope and Albion, the other team that Calvin will face this year listed in the DIII News Top 25 is ninth-ranked Wheaton (IL). Wheaton senior Kent Raymond is the pre-season player of the year. Other players that Calvin will or could face this year that are receiving national recognition include honorable mention pre-season All-Americans Tony Benford (Trine) and Anthony Pettaway (Defiance).

On the women's side, MIAA rival Hope is ranked 23rd. Other pre-season nationally-ranked teams that Calvin will face during the season include sixth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater and 10th-ranked Thomas More (KY). Individual players that Calvin will face include pre-season All-American Jayme Thiem of Thomas More and pre-season honorable mention All-America selection Brittany Kemperman of Albion.

The Calvin men's basketball team is scheduled to open its season on November 21 when it hosts Grace Bible College at the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Quest Center on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Also competing in the tournament will be teams from Baldwin-Wallace and Spring Arbor.

The Calvin women's basketball team is scheduled to open its season on November 15 when it travels to WHAC opponent Madonna for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Both Calvin teams are opening up practice this week.
