NOTRE DAME, IN -- The nationally-ranked Calvin women's soccer team remained
unbeaten in MIAA play and posted its fifth consecutive shutout in the process,
defeating host Saint Mary's 4-0 Saturday afternoon.
Including MIAA Tournament action from 2006 and 2007, Calvin now has an
unbeaten streak of 29 games in league play dating back to the 2005 season, with
Calvin posting a 28-0-1 recording during that streak. Calvin has not allowed a
goal in league play this year and has a defensive scoreless streak in league
competition of more than 600 minutes dating back to last year.
Ranked eighth nationally, Calvin (9-2-1 overall, 4-0-0 MIAA) scored three
times in the first half including two goals from junior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos
Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) to take control of the game on Saturday.
Calvin took a 1-0 lead just 1:58 into the contest on a goal by sophomore
Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) off a feed from senior Elizabeth
Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew HS). Ottenhoff gave Calvin a 2-0 lead
on a rebound shot off a strike by Ribbens that ricocheted off the post and to
the feet of Ottenhoff. Sophomore Stephanie Malburg (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills
Northern HS) then fed Ottenhoff on a give-and-go pass with Ottenhoff depositing
her team-leading ninth goal of the year the play. The goal came with 11:31 left
in the first half.
Senior Michelle Koele (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) closed out the scoring
on a goal with 10:44 remaining with junior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western
Michigan Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin held a 20-5 shots at goal advantage with juniors Alyssa Bergsma
(Walker/Calvin Christian HS) and Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS)
splitting the time in nets for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Olivet for a 4:00
p.m. league contest.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Knights’ unblemished conference record was
jeopardized for merely 19 seconds on Saturday afternoon.
In what turned out to be a pivotal 21st minute, Calvin sophomore Scott Hooker
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) responded moments later to an Adrian goal –
compliments of Eric Drake – that initially stunned the first-place Knights.
Hooker’s strike put Calvin back on track, as coach Chris Hughes’ squad
controlled momentum and used a second-half goal from senior Michael Holwerda
(Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian HS) to overcome the cellar-dwelling
Bulldogs, 2-1.
“We didn’t play that well,” said Holwerda. “We’re just happy to get
a win. That’s the main thing.”
The Knights out-shot a Bulldogs team, 23-7, in a game where several offensive
opportunities went awry – due in part to the stellar play of Adrian
goalkeeper Alex Pavila, who reeled in nine saves and shut down two breakaway
runs by Holwerda and freshman Ahmed Gobana (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville HS) in
the second half.
“We missed a lot of chances to score and we got away from…our game,” said
Holwerda.
Holwerda’s go-ahead goal came in the 56th minute after the senior captain
trapped a sideline pass from junior Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian
HS) and sent a dipping rifle over Pavila’s head from the corner of the box.
It was Holwerda’s third strike of the season, as he is now second on the
team in total points (9).
“Holtrop played me a ball and I tried to get a foot on it, and it just
happened,” said Holwerda.
Calvin’s heralded defensive backfield was nearly flawless, allowing only one
shot on net – Drake’s lone goal.
For the second consecutive game, defenders Chad Hart (Byron Center/South
Christian HS) and Lucas Wilgenburg (Visalia, CA/Central Valley Christian HS),
sweeper Greg Snapper (Madison, WI/Madison West HS) and Holtrop, the stopper,
were the only Knights not to be subbed out.
“They’ve been carrying us for pretty much the whole season so far,” said
Holwerda of Calvin’s defense. “Each game they keep us together because we
know they’re going to play solid, they’re going to play consistent. Without
them we would not be where we are right now.”
Calvin (6-0-0, 9-3-0) remains unbeaten in MIAA play, alone atop league
standings, and will hit the road for two games before having a three-game home
stand beginning Oct. 22.
The Knights will travel to Angola, Ind. to take on Trine on Tuesday, Oct. 14,
and will head to Albion for round two against the Britons next Saturday, Oct.
18.
