Volleyball Sweeps Adrian;
Women's Golf Completes Day One at MIAA Tournament;
Men's and Women's Cross Country Compete at Michigan Intercollegiates
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Adrian 0 (Calvin d. Adrian 25-19, 25-16, 25-16)
ADRIAN -- Nearly two weeks after dropping a five-set match to Adrian at home, Calvin returned the favor, defeating the host Bulldogs 25-19, 25-16, 25-16 in front of an Adrian homecoming crowd Friday night at the Merillat Center.
Ranked 17th in the most recent AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin (14-4 overall, 8-2 MIAA) moves back into a tie for second place with Alma with Friday's win.
A balanced offensive attack was the key to the Calvin win as the Knights posted a team hitting percentage of .306 and featured four players with seven kills or more. Freshman Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Northern Michigan Christian HS) led the way for the Knights with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .296. Senior Jessica Garlick (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had nine kills and a blistering .500 hitting percentage while freshman Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL) had eight kills and junior Rachel DeYoung (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) seven kills with DeYoung also recording a .353 hitting percentage.
Adrian (10-10 overall, 6-6 MIAA) hit just .106 as a team as the Knights collected 48 digs and 14 block assists.
Junior libero Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) led the Calvin defense with 18 digs while Kamp had four block assists and junior Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) three block assists. Sears also tallied three service aces. Senior setter Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian HS) was able to toss out 37 assists and chalk up five digs.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to Saint Mary's for a 7:00 p.m. conference match.

WOMEN'S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK -- The first day of competition is complete at the 36-hole MIAA Tournament at the Bedford Valley Country Club. On day one, Calvin fired a team score of 420 strokes. Juniors Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were Calvin's top two finishers with rounds of 98. Junior Kelsey Kolk (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) was next with a round of 99 while freshman Katy Berghuis (Wyoming/Calvin Christian HS) had a 125.
Calvin is in eighth place at the MIAA Tournament, four strokes ahead of Adrian. Olivet leads the field with a team score of 339 strokes.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it completes the tournament with a final 18-hole round.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
MILFORD -- A group of runners competed for the Calvin men's and women's cross country teams at the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday afternoon at Kensington Park with Detroit-Mercy serving as host.
Although Calvin rested its top group of runners in both the men's and women's teams on Friday, the Knights still had a solid performance as the men's team took eighth in a field of 20 teams in the 8K race with a team score of 205 points while the women's team took fourth in a field of 19 teams in the 5K race with a team score of 133 points.
The top finisher for the Calvin men was Ben VanWyk (Sussex, NJ/High Point) with a 36th place time of 27:04. Rounding out Calvin's top five were senior Tim Langenberg (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge HS) in 37th (27:08), junior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) in 42nd (27:14), senior Sawyer Koops (Cortez, CO/Lexington Christian HS) in 44th place (27:18) and junior Kyle Mast (Zeeland/Holland Christian HS) in 46th place (27:20).
In the women's race, Calvin's top finisher was freshman Rebecca Hiemstra (Dusseldorf, Germany/International School of Dusseldorf) in 21st place (19:53) with junior teammate Sarah Dugan (Freeland/Freeland HS) right behind in 22nd place (19:53). Rounding out Calvin's top five were sophomore Gretchen Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) in 28th (20:11), freshman Kelly Larsen (Decorah, IA/Decorah HS) in 30th (20:24) and sophomore Anna VanWyk (Dorr/South Christian HS) in 32nd (20:24).
In the men's 8K open race, Calvin's top finisher was sophomore Dakota Rees (Kittery Pointe, ME) in 19th (27:40) while freshman Amanda Send (Traverse City/Traverse City Christian HS) was Calvin's top finisher in the women's 5K open race, placing 23rd (20:52).
