CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 9, 2008

CALVIN TENNIS TEAMS RECEIVE ITA ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

The Calvin men's and women's tennis teams have received the ITA All-Academic Team Award. In order to receive the honor from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, collegiate tennis teams must maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or higher.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Calvin men's tennis team has received ITA All-Academic Honors -- all under the watch of current head coach John Ross.

Four members of the Calvin men's tennis team have also received ITA Scholar-Athlete honors. In order to receive ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades, an individual needed to have been a varsity letter winner, maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the 2007-08 academic year and enrolled at the competing school for at least two full semesters.

Members of the Calvin men's tennis team that received ITA Scholar-Athlete honors include freshman Andrew DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS), junior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community HS) and seniors Ricky Tilton (Gap, Pa./Lancaster County Christian HS) and Michael Goorhouse (Holland/Holland Christian HS).

The Calvin women's tennis is receiving the ITA All-Academic Team Award under the direction of head coach Jerry Bergsma who recently completed his eighth year as head coach.

In addition, seven members of Bergsma's team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete honors. Those individuals include sophomores Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Kelsey Bushhouse (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS) and Rachel Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshmen Christina Stavro (Bellflower, Ca./Valley Christian HS), Abigal Belford (Batavia, IL/Batavia HS), Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS).

This past spring, the Calvin men's tennis team finished 14-6 overall and in second place in the final MIAA standings while the Calvin women's tennis team finished 18-6 overall and in second place in the final league standings, establishing a Calvin single-season record for dual match victories in the process.
