Ricky Tilton Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American
GRAND RAPIDS -- Recent Calvin College graduate Ricky Tilton has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. A native of Gap, Pennsylvania, Tilton has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team in the at-large college division.
The college division includes NCAA II, III and NAIA institutions. The at-large category of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program includes the sports of swimming, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, water polo and ice hockey.
A four-year member of the Calvin men's tennis team, Tilton is the second Calvin men's tennis player in as many years to receive the award as former teammate Rafael Siebenschein was a third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American last spring.
In addition, he is one of two MIAA athletes to be named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American as Olivet senior Dustin Meisner has been named to the first team.
A biology major with a Spanish minor, Tilton carried a 3.94 grade point average at Calvin. Tilton was graduated from Calvin last month. He plans to attend medical school and is currently choosing which school to attend. Eventually, he plans to use his medical education and Spanish language skills overseas.
A graduate of Lancaster County Christian High School, Tilton compiled a career singles mark of 50-25 and a career doubles record of 59-24 at Calvin. He also put together a 38-21 career singles record while playing at No. 1 singles and a 37-16 mark at No. 1 doubles.
This spring, he was named to the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year and was named the recipient of the MIAA's Lawrence Green Scholarship Award and the co-recipient of the MIAA's Stowe Memorial Award. Last month, Tilton was named the recipient of Calvin's Bere' Memorial Award - given annually to the top senior male student-athlete at Calvin.
During the 2008 spring season, he was ranked as high as seventh in the ITA Division III Central Region rankings. During the fall, he reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regionals for the second straight year.
During his four years, Tilton helped the Calvin men's tennis team finish as league runners-up three times. In 2007, he anchored a Calvin men's tennis team that received a bid to the NCAA III Tournament, reaching the second round.
Tilton has also been three-time member of the ITA All-Academic Team and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. He has qualified to receive both honors for a fourth straight year later this summer.
Calvin has now had its athletes receive Academic All-America accolades 75 times including 49 times in the last 11 years.
