Wittingen/Bratt Receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Honors;
Drew Johnson Named to Mideast All-Region Golden Glove Team;
Baseball Team Finishes 25th in Final D3baseball.com Top 25 poll;

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Two members of the Calvin women's track and field team have received ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District IV honors in the women's college cross
country/track and field division. Senior Sarah Wittingen has been named to the
all-district first team while junior Julie Bratt has been named to the second
team.
A graduate of East Grand Rapids High School, Wittingen is receiving ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District honors for the third straight year. As a member
of the first team, she advances to the national ballot and is now eligible for
Academic All-America consideration.
An accounting major at Calvin, Wittingen carries a 3.96 grade point average.
This past spring, she was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for the third
consecutive year and was named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth
straight year. At the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she was a
part of three All-America performances including a national championship effort
in the 400 meter hurdles. She also placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles and
ran the leadoff leg on Calvin's fifth place 4x400 meter relay team. A two-time
Great Lakes Regional Runner of the Year recipient, Wittingen concluded her
outdoor track and field career at Calvin as a 10-time NCAA III All-American.
Wittingen is the Calvin record holder in the 400 meter hurdles (59.36) and 100
meter hurdles (14.28).
Bratt is receiving ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for the
first time in her career. A native of Lynden, Washington, Bratt carries a 3.6
grade point average while majoring in education. This spring, she was named the
MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer after capturing league titles in
the long jump and triple jump. A graduate of Lynden Christian High School,
Bratt was also named to the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year.
During the year, Bratt established a new Calvin record in the triple jump
(37-10 3/4). Bratt also qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in the triple jump, becoming the first individual in Calvin
women's track and field history to do so.
BASEBALL
Calvin College sophomore centerfielder Drew Johnson has been recognized for
outstanding defensive play this past spring. A native of Boise, Idaho, Johnson
has been named to the Division III All-Mideast Region Golden Glove Team. A
graduate of Mountain View High School, Johnson recorded a sterling fielding
average of .987 this past year, commiting just one error in 75 total chances.
He was also credited with six assists from his outfield position.
Johnson helped the Calvin baseball team the year with a 32-10 record as the
Knights captured their first MIAA title since 2002 and established a Calvin
single-season record for victories. Calvin also advanced to the NCAA III
Tournament for the first time since 2002 and for the fourth time in school
history.
Under the direction of first-year head coach John Sparks, the Calvin baseball
team finished the year ranked 25th in the final D3baseball.com Top-25 poll,
marking the first time Calvin has concluded a year natoinally-ranked. Calvin
was ranked in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll for five weeks of the 2008 season
and was ranked as high as 21st at one point of the season.

JIM DETERS UPDATE
Former Calvin College baseball standout Jim Deters had his best pitching
performance of his 2008 professional season Thursday evening. A 2005 Calvin
College graduate, Deters is again pitching with the Kinston Indians located in
Kinston, North Carolina. Kinston is an advanced Class A affiiate of the
Cleveland Indians.
Also a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters tossed a
complete-game three-hit shutout Thursday evening in a 2-0 victory over the
Wilmington...Deters struck out five and did not walk a batter in the nine
inning affair. Deters (3-2) turned 25 on Wednesday, it was his wife’s 24th
birthday today. It was the third spot start of the year for Deters, who has
made the majority of his 17 appearances from the bullpen.
The pitching performance lowered the season earned run average for Deters to
3.20. He has 26 batters and walked just nine in 45.0 innings of work this year.
