CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 10, 2008
BASEBALL
Calvin 5, Tri-State 2
(written by Chaz Amidon ’09)
GRAND RAPIDS - Junior Nate Pocock turned in a complete-game, nine-strikeout
performance to bolster the Knights to a 5-2 victory over Tri-State on Thursday
afternoon.
Calvin (17-2, 9-0) preserved their unbeaten conference record by splintering
eight hits against TSU freshman pitcher Elliot Gaff on an afternoon marked by
incessant rains, which caused the postponement of game two.
“We knew it was going to be a battle,” said Pocock of Wayland,
Massachusetts. “Offensively we were trying to take one at-bat at a time, and
we had some nice, timely hits that got some runs across.”
The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning off two Gaffe
blunders - Alex Marcus scored on a wild pitch, and Jacob Vriesman was plated on
an attempted pick-off to second that went awry. Vriesman recorded an RBI single
in the inning as well.
Marcus’ RBI groundout in the third would up the Knights’ lead to 4-0
before the Thunder responded with two runs in the fourth.
Calvin added an insurance run in the sixth, as Drew Johnson (2 of 3) blooped
an RBI single - his second hit of the day - to right-center field.
Pocock (5-0) notched his fifth win of the season and trimmed his ERA to 3.94
with the victory. He allowed five hits throughout and labored through a minor
lapse in the fourth inning, where the Thunder tallied three hits and two runs.
“Occasionally the mound got a little slippery, but it’s something you
never want to have to think about that,” said Pocock of the weather
conditions. “The grounds crew did a great job getting on top of that in the
sixth inning and that made a difference.”
Calvin is now 16-2 all-time against Tri-State, including a perfect 11-0
against the Thunder at Calvin Field.
The Knights will travel to Angola, Ind. on Saturday for a doubleheader against
Tri-State, barring no complications with the weather.
“I think (the win) is great, but at the same time, as we always say, we’ve
got to look to tomorrow,” said Pocock. “We can enjoy today but we’ve got
to go out and win the next one.”
