MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
OXFORD, OH -- Calvin College senior John Boumgarden had a solid opening day at the NCAA III Men's Swimming and Diving championships on the campus of the University of Miami of Ohio, placing 24th in the prelims of the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.09. The time was just two tenths off of Boumgarden's career-best effort in the event. Boumgarden was seeded 36th heading into Thursday's prelims with a time of 21.25.
The time did not advance Boumgarden (Naperville, IL/Naperville North High School), to Thursday's finals but did provide a strong start for the senior who is looking to do well in Friday's 100 butterfly. Boumgarden is seed 17th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.59.
"John had a very encouraging first day," said Calvin men's swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "He is peaking at the right time and he put together some strong momentum for tomorrow."
Boumgarden is also schedule to compete in the 100 freestyle prelims on Saturday. He is seeded 31st in the event with a time of 46.44.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the first time in his career, Calvin senior Caleb Veldhouse has received Division III Great Lakes All-District Honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Veldhouse has been named to the NABC All-District second team.
Veldhouse averaged 17.2 points and 3.1 rebounds a game this year while connecting on 58 of 136 (.426) of his three-point field goal attempts. Veldhouse also hit the 1,000 point plateua during the season and currently sits in 11th place on the all-time Calvin men's basketball scoring list with 1,292 points.
Veldhouse was one of four players from the MIAA to receive all-district honors as Marcus Vanderheide (Hope) was named to the first team and Tyler Wolfe (Hope) and Drew Yancey (Albion) were named to the second team.
Veldhouse is the first Calvin player to receive NABC All-District honors since Dan Aultman was a first team selection in 2005.
