Men's and Women's Track and Field Have Strong Performances at Grand Rapids Championships;
Women's Tennis Opens Season With Win over DuPage CC

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams had strong indoor performances at the Grand Rapids Rapids Championships hosted by Grand Valley State on Friday night. A big highlight for the women's team came in the 800 meters as junior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) took first place with an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 2:15.61. Freshman Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a strong performance in the event, taking third with a time of 2:22.0. Another big highlight for the Calvin women came from freshman Rebekah VanDyk (Bellflower, CA) who took second in the high jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying jump of 5-5.
In the 55 meter dash, freshman Kim Holtrop (Calvin Christian HS) led a one-two Calvin finish, winning with a time of 7.58, edging freshman teammate Bethany Beachum (Fruitport HS) who took second in 7.59. Holtrop also added a fourth place time of 27.24 in the 200 meters.
In the one mile run, Calvin took the top seven places with sophomore Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) taking first (5:17.19), junior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) taking second (5:20.51), sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking third (5:23.47), sophomore Nicole Farr (Warrenville, IL) taking fourth (5:27.35), freshman Kristen Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) taking fifth (5:27.38), senior Val Nydam (Uxbridge, MA) taking sixth (5:32.91) and freshman Bethany Hammer (Elk Rapids HS) taking seventh (5:40.16).
In the 3,000 meters, senior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) took second (10:24.29) while senior Lynn Marsh (New Jennings, IN) taking first in the 5,000 meters (18:58.73) followed by junior Jesi Hale (Rehoboth, NM) in second (18:58.77).
In the 4x400 meter relay, the Calvin quartet of Tuuk, Bergstrom, junior Kristen VanSickel (Pittsburgh, PA) and junior Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took first in a time of 4:03.29.In the long jump, freshman Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ) took second (17-0) while junior teammate Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) was third (16-0 1/4). Bratt added a second place jump of 34-5 1/2 in the triple jump while sophomore teammate Hayley Faber (Elkhorn, NE) was third (33-3 1/4). Junior Ashley Glover (Northview HS) had the top throwing performances of the evening for the Calvin women, placing seventh in the shot put (36-7 3/4) and sixth in the weight throw (39-0 1/4).
On the men's side, senior Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) won the 400 meters with a time of 50.94 while senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) won the 3,000 meters (8:38.32) and senior Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) the 5,000 meters (14:51.51). Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Cok, senior Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Brad Stroner (Lakewood HS) and sophomore Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN) took first place with a time of 3:31.21. In addition, junior Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) won the high jump with a jump of 6-6 3/4. Junior Corey Velgersdyk (Bloomington, MN) added a first place jump of 41-4 1/4 in the triple jump and a third place leap of 20-9 3/4 in the long jump.
Other notables for the Calvin men included a second place mark of 52-8 3/4 by senior Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) in the weight throw, a fourth place throw of 45-10 1/2 by freshman Ken Echtinaw (Caledonia HS) in the shot put, a second place jump of 38-11 3/4 by sophomore Jonathon DeRuiter (Bellingham, WA) in the triple jump, a second place time of 8.18 by sophomore Nate Musch (Ypsilanti) in the 55 meter hurdles and a second place time of 1:58.41 by Wrobel in the 800 meters.
Both teams will now prepare to compete at an indoor meet hosted by Anderson University next Saturday afternoon.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Calvin women's tennis team opened its season with a 9-0 victory over the College of DuPage Friday evening in Aurora, Illinois. The victory will not be counted on Calvin's final won-loss record however as it came against a two-year institution.
Calvin returns to action this afternoon when it takes on Carthage College, ranked 10th in the latest Central Region rankings.

MEN'S CLUB ICE HOCKEY
MIDLAND -- Calvin's five-game win streak came to an end as the Knights suffered a 6-4 loss to Northwood in the semifinals of the MCHC Tournament Friday night. Calvin (16-12) will now face Saginaw Valley State University in the third place game today at 2:00 p.m.
Scoring goals for Calvin in the loss to Northwood on Friday were Jeff DeKorne, Ben Brandsen, Clay VerKaik and Eric Baker. Credited with assists were VerKaik, Steve Krommendyk, Emery Lovse and Baker with Baker chalking up two assists on the night. Goaltender John Singelton had 29 saves in defeat. Northwood outshot Calvin 35-25.
