Calvin Club Ice Hockey Team On A Roll

Calvin 3, Oakland 1

MIDLAND -- The Calvin club ice hockey team is on a roll after winning its fifth straight game last night Calvin Hockeyas the Knights defeated Oakland University 3-1 in a quarterfinal game of the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference. Calvin advances to the semifinals this evening to take on Northwood at 6:30 p.m. All of the games are taking place in Midland.

Calvin has now won seven of its last eight games and is now 16-11 on the season. Last weekend, Calvin earned its sixth straight trip to the upcoming ACHA Division III National Tournament with a pair of wins at the ACHA Division III Regionals in Midland.

In the win over Oakland on Thursday night, Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Emery Lovse. The Knights then went up 2-0 on a goal by Caleb Barthel. in the second period, Calvin was able to hold onto a 2-1 lead by fighting of a 5-on-3 power play opportunity by Oakland.

Niether team was able to score again until the closing seconds when Calvin's Clay Verkaik scored the clincher on an empty net goal. Goaltender John Singleton was stellar for the Knights with 29 saves including a pair of big saves in the first period. Also picking up assists for Calvin were J.D. Lussier, Adam VanOpstall, Steve Krommendyk, Lucas Huyser-Wierenga and Eric Baker.
