LISA WINKLE NAMED RECIPIENT OF NCAA TOP VIII AWARD
GRAND RAPIDS -- Lisa Winkle has been named a recipient of one of the most
prestigious awards in all of NCAA athletics. A 2007 graduate of Calvin College,
Winkle has been named a recipients of the NCAA Top VIII Award.
Since 1973, the NCAA Top VIII Award has been presented each year by the NCAA.
The award honors eight outstanding senior student-athletes of the preceding
calendar year. The award recognizes student-athletes for their athletics
success, academic achievement and community service. Past recipients of the
award include Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Rebbeca Lobo, Archie Griffin, John
Elway, Karch Kiraly, Tracy Caulkins, Doug Flutie, Cheryl Miller, David
Robinson, Lisa Fernandez, Aly Wagner, Kara Lawson, Cat Osterman and Drew Brees
just to name a few.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of South Christian High School, Winkle
is the first MIAA student-athlete to receive the NCAA Top VIII Award.
Winkle is joined on this year's NCAA Top VIII Award list by Rachel Buehler of
Stanford University, Roberto Castro of Georgia Tech University, Dennis Dixon of
the University of Oregon, Sarah Pavan of the University of Nebraska, Ben
Wildman-Tobriner of Stanford University and Sarah Zerzan of Willamette
University.
The eight recipients of this year's NCAA Top VIII Award will be recognized at
the NCAA Honors Celebration on Sunday, January 13, at the 2008 NCAA Convention
in Nashville.
"This is an incredible honor for Lisa and for Calvin College," said Calvin
women's athletics director Dr. Nancy Meyer. "I've been attending the NCAA
convention for several years and one of the highlights of the convention is
when the winners of the NCAA Top VIII Award are announced. Lisa is very
deserving of this award and the entire Calvin College community is thrilled to
see her recognized on a national stage like this."
A 2007 WBCA/Kodak Division III All-American and Josten’s Trophy Women’s
Basketball recipient, Winkle was a two-time conference MVP and four-time
first-team all-conference selection. Winkle graduated in May 2007 as a 10-time
NCAA Division III All-American in outdoor track and field. She was a part of
two MIAA Championship teams in women's basketball and four in track and field.
She also helped lead the women's basketball team to the national quarterfinals
in 2005 and 2007 and the women's track and field team to national runner-up
finishes in 2004, 2006 and 2007. She was named the 2006 Michigan Female Athlete
of Year by the Detroit Athletic Club, a 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year award
nominee, and is a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.
As a Calvin student, Winkle was a member of the Calvin student athlete
advisory council and was a volunteer tutor/instructor a Sunday school teacher.
She is currently a mathematics teacher at Grand Rapids South Christian High
School.
