Calvin Divers Have Big Weekend at Grand Valley State Diving Invitational
ALLENDALE -- Suffice it to say, second-year Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan has a big smile on his face right now. On Thursday, his wife gave birth to a baby girl - the first child for the Paskvan family. Paskvan, his wife and new daughter, were able to return home from the hospital on Saturday morning and later that afternoon, he was able to coach his diving contingent at the Grand Valley State Diving Invitational and his divers gave him even more reason to celebrate.
In the women's one-meter competition, Calvin took four of the top six spots with three of its divers posting NCAA III qualifying scores. Junior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) won the competition with a score of 423.80 while sophomore Casey Herman (Libertyville, IL) was third (401.80) and senior Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (399.60). All three divers met NCAA III qualifying standards with their scores. Junior Jeena Velzen (Unity Christian HS) also took sixth (366.05), sophomore Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) eighth (320.20) freshman Carmen Brummel (Holland Christian HS) ninth (299.55).
On the women's three-meter board, Deur and Beal both met the NCAA III qualifying standard with Deur winning the competition with a score of 457.90 while Beal was second (411.30). Herman took third (391.80) with Velzen fifth (349.80) and Leach sixth (316.60).
On the men's side, freshman Stephen Kruse (Northville HS) and junior Dennis Steenbergen (Aylmer, ON/London District Christian HS) both had personal best scoring marks in the one and three-meter competitions. On the one-meter board, Kruse was fifth (368.45) and Steenbergen sixth (341.00) while Kruse was also fifth on the three-meter board (342.65) and Steenbergen sixth (323.00).
